We received fresh cadavers again this week, 'te. So we were selected by our anatomy instructor to prepare the specimen, craniotomically. Considering the last time we did craniotomy, our specimens were perfect. What we did was the removal of the scalp, superficially and careful not to retract the intrinsic muscles of the skull. Complete scalp removal was needed in order to observe the intrinsic muscles of the skull: the occipitalis, the frontalis--forming the occiptofrontalis, then the temporalis. After the scalp was excised completely, we then excised said muscles inferiorly to allow us to proceed with the craniotonomical procedure. But at the same time saving parts of said muscle for later observation.
What we did was rather amazing; it is called coronal craniotomical cut; a similar procedure what Neuro-surgeons do on the living body. What we did was take a ruler and measure 2 cm from the suprarorbital notch and mark that spot (in the anterior portion of the skull), then we flipped the body in prone position and marked another spot 2 cm below the occipital protuberance in the posterior region of the skull. From this we then we connected the marked regions that thus forms the Calvaria of the skull.
Using gentle and at the same time firm cut, we applied a surgical electric saw completely remove the cranial calvaria to expose the meninges, and the entire brain itself. We removed the brain at the base of the spinal cord, adjacent to the pons and the medula oblangata. The brain, actually, was in great anatomical condition and will allow further neurological examinations later; as we will take brain samples to analyze it histologically.
Inside the base of the skull, we were able to demonstrate the location of the pituitary gland within the sellae turcica, the presence of the major cranial nerves: the occulomotor nerves, the optic nerves, the abducent nerves etc etc.
Doing this was myself, Mike, Thiru, Rick and Shalabh. The Dean himself was there to observe our anatomical exposition and what was great was that he commended us as 'future surgeons' hahaha. It feels so good, jud 'te.
