Today we were introduced to the techniques of transphenoidal approaches of anatomy. And what an awesome technique it is! Today I utilized a surgical saw and proceeded with bifrontal craniotomy; severing the frontal bone from the parietal suture, which was once a embryological cartilaginous attachment during the fetal stage (prior to birth). I had the honor of holding in my hands a human brain.

Our clinical approach focused more on the identification and understanding of the function of the specific nervous system. We identified the 12 cranial nerves and later were introduced to the first phase of the 31 spinal nerves that are  part of the tributary system of the central nervous system--which later innervates into the processes of the peripheral nervous system. Innervating specific muscles.

I really really realize that I have a love for surgery and surgical openings; and was delighted to hear from my instructor that I have a 'surgeon's touch' especially when I surgically manifested the bifrontal craniotomy.

I realized today that Surgery is definitely something I would like to specialize in.

I cannot wait till next week when we go inside the brain itself and begin sectioning.

ITS THE WEEKEND! Going to relax today and begin studying later tomorrow and some light reviews on Sunday with some students.

I just came back from dinner with some of my colleagues. It feels so good to be finished with studies this week; who ever said that Fridays were useless is totally wrong. Fridays, for us, is our only 'time off' day. hahaha.

Plan for tomorrow? Meet up with Jeff, Katie, Chris for a brief 4 hour review for Histology.

Nothing too hard; just light reviews.

Well today was another typical day. We had had histology today form 8-10, then anatomy form 10-12; and an hour break then we started Embryology from 1-3. From 3-4 we had histology lab; and monitoring and getting used to light microscopy, as well as scanning electron microscopy and staining techniques and identification of particular organelles.

I don't know what some students are complaining about embryology being hard. The material isn't even that bad, i mean its to the point and basic. In my opinion, that is. Anatomy is more of a concern since the volume of information that we have to deal with, especially regarding to medical gross anatomy. The material isn't hard, per se, the volume and saturation needed to be digested is a concern considering the amount of time we have till our first examination. Thank God for the mnemonics and for my study group partners.

It's kind of scary how one acclimates and actually 'gets used' to the demanding schedule. Eh, such is life.

Thats all for today, I guess.

Was in the anatomy lab for 3 hours; analyzing the brachial plexus of the upper limb. Identified muscles and their innervations, functions, origins, insertions etc. We had fresh cadavers arrive today so I was able to start to prepare some of the cadavers and exposing the C5, C6, C7, C8 and T1 nerves of the CNS.

As I was making a longitudinal incision on the upper limb of the cadaver, my partner pointed out that the subject had 'pink fingernails'. It so happened that the subject did have pink nail polish still on her fingernails.

Tomorrow we will expose either the anterior thoraco appendiculars or the suprahumeral muscles.

Anatomy was one of my most difficult subjects next to Pharmacology Dodong, but i love Anatomy more than all my subjects. For me that is the most essential part of learning  on how to care/cure a patient... ;)

I really like anatomy, 'te. The volume of information startled me at first, but after a while, if you analyze it system by system; it is pretty digestible.

I love getting in the cadaver lab and just exposing the muscles, innervations, arterial supplies etc.

Last week, 'te, we were introduced to craniotomy. Making a transverse cut of the skull exposing the skull in half.  I've never seen so much CSF in my life.

It was amazing kaayo.

Today we had lab and I led my group in exposing the posterior fore-arm muscles as well as opening the palmar surface. We identified the extensor carpi radialis, extensor digitorum, as well as attachment muscles.

Today was awesome as we were able to peel the palmar fascia of the hand; exposing the thenar as well as the hypothenar muscles. We were able to see the hypothenar prominence and the thenar prominence; and in the central surface, identified the ulnar and median nerves that passed through the carpal tunnel region.

My partner in Anatomy Lab, Korosh, helped me in reticulating the entire superficial fascia of the posterior and anterior forearm. We worked in unison in exposing the superior muscles as well as the identification of deep muscles, their innervations and the septum that divided them.

We had a lab practical today. Perfect score.

:)
