So far, the happiest day of my life was in December 15, 2009. That was the day that I was honored with the reception of my Medical White Coat, commemorating our transition from 2nd year medical students into Medical Interns. The nostalgic feeling of remembering my stresses and painful challenges of undergraduate school, the tears spent on research and the lamentations I had given to my parents on the difficulty of study, was--at that time, wiped away. The hardest part of medical school, the first two years are the years that make and break a medical student; and the crown of stress is--the reception of the White Coat.

I can remember it clearly and distinctly; that morning when I woke up I had to remove the beard that I had in order to assume a clean cut look during the ceremony, gave my parents a phone call and talked to my siblings and my uncle and aunt. It was rather surreal in that we just took our Medical Practicals the week prior, which was probably--the hardest exam Ive taken in my entire life. Not only was it timed, but to answer it under tongue and regimented authority of our physician-professors who were not so..merciful as undergraduate professors. By grace of God alone, i was able to  pass those exams and get them out of the way.

Getting ready for the event, I visited Fr. Ranulfo Gunido, our Catholic Chaplain for the medical school, gave him thanks for allowing me to sing in the choir and take part in the readings during mass. Job and I were rather dazed in that we both survived 2 years of battle-hardened studies; and literally crying in front of each other because of the stress...in reading, studies, and exam protocols. As we sat in front of Fr. Gunido, we were contemplative. He prayed with us and reminded us to keep focused, dont loose sight.

His exact words, and I can clearly remember it, "Don't ever numb your ears to the dying, the poor, the suffering. Always see Christ in those who are suffering..."

The rest of the night was preparing for the event. I have never expected or felt so much pomp scenery, all the traditional spectacles, songs, singings, and protocols. I really ignored the surroundings since my eyes were focused on the rack of white coats. Somewhere in that pile of coats, I thought to myself, was mine. My coat. Receiving it, and being addressed was an awakening.
This surge of happiness and contentedness overwhelmed me. Colleagues around me were crying, sobbing, in tears, some where happy, laughing, some were quiet with strict faces. I was the one that was crying. Crying.

It was like a blur to me, so much emotion around the air. It seemed like a moment, but then we were commanded by the Dean of the Medical College to stand. We then recited the Sacred Hippocratic Oath. Talk about hair-rising experience.

It was never about me, never my abilities, no. Rather, it was HIM who kept on pushing me and telling me to keep on going, even when I felt like I could do no more. God is, indeed, Great. :)

Some pictures of that day:

With my colleagues. (From left to right: Tom, Aniba, Thiro, myself, Sidra, Shirly)
I had to stop crying in this picture. My face is red; only because tears were coming down that face moments before it was taken. :)

Sidra and our favorite Biochemistry, Surgical Neurology Professor: Dr. Bruce.
Epic.

With my very good friend, Job. We both were choir members at our local parish.

One of the happiest day of my life was October 2003. We drove to Newark International Airport to meet my mother after her vacation to the Philippines; but she also brought with her my grandfather. I had to prepare myself for this moment, considering the fact that the last time I saw him was 1998 when I returned for the funeral of my Lola. When I saw him, however, i could not prevent my face from emitting smiles and let alone hold back the tears. He looked at me with his beautiful eyes and with his quintessential smile.

By God's Grace, Lo', I will see you soon this coming July. I have missed you.

October 23, 2009.

Was the day that my mother and sister decided to come visit me for a week. Tho i was stressed due to work and studies, having my mother and sister stay in my apartment for a week was blessing. The company of my mother, and sister whilst i studied, and having the luxury of eating my mother's home-cooked meals was...amazing.

I also had my friends Job, Albert and Brandon join us for dinner. It will always be in my memory. That and receiving good news that my sister, Lorraine, also was accepted to medical school proper made the event all the more joyous. Will always remember that moment.

Plus, mommy's cooking and mommy's support is always a blessing.

July 21, 1999.

I became, officially, and older brother to my 2nd younger brother. The birth of my beloved younger brother Andre Nicholas spirited a sense of fraternal pride i had in my baby brother. Seeing him in the hospital floor and seeing the multitude of black hair on his head, and intchikon looking eyes made me beam with pride. My darling baby brother. Andre Nicholas. Your eyes saw mine and my eyes saw yours.

Oh i remember you when you were but a babe. Now you are 10 years old turning 11. From cradle to the present, i have watched you grow and become a fine, young boy you have become.

I love you, doy. You and Don Rico have really made your Kuya happy. God has blessed me with fine brothers. Fine brothers.
