that's great, lorenz.  enjoy and learn more!

hehe, thank you, tita !

now that i am taking doctoral statistics course, i might (hopefully) understand some of the statistical rhetoric that will be displayed throughout the symposium. i was invited to attend by the head medical administrator of varian medical systems. to be amongst such esteemed doctors whilst i am just a lowly amateur intern is humbling for me. and i am grateful. tho i be a shrimp among whales...i am honored to learn from them. one of the leading stereotactic radiosurgeons will be there. i am so excited to hear and learn from him...   :D

I just received my final grade for the last class: 94%

This equates to an A- in the Ph.D academic scale. My goal is to get an A on this current class : Doctoral Statistics.

I want to graduate S.C.L this time around. 8)

I've been catching up with some of my old college friends, and high school friends vis-a-vis facebook this week. Its just so darn crazy to see so many of my friends now either engaged or married and have kids. Wowzers. One of my friends from high school asked me, "so are you getting married soon or what, or are you too busy with life as a doctor?"

Haha, i said to her, "when the right one comes along".

Its true, one cannot just marry anyone. One has to make sure she will be good for him, and will complement him.

;D

going into this field, one has to sacrifice a lot of time. my twenties have rushed by, most of it was spent in labs, classrooms, hospitals, seminars. the solace a doctor gets is in seeing the eyes of one's patients, seeing the relief they get when we give treatment to their malady. the smile of a young child after i bandage his arms, or to hear the laughter of an elderly patient after spending some minutes to check up on them..is reward alone.

in a way, i see a semblance of a priest and a physician. the priest cares for the soul of man, whereas the physician cares for the body of man.

i find satisfaction in this. the rewards outweighs the sacrifices.

you know , tita, couple of years back - say 2 or 3 years - i really wanted to be married by 30. but now , i don't feel the urge to be married at said age. the way i see it, if one is concerned and preoccupied about another person, one looses a sense of self and forgets to care for one's own self. so i'm doing just that; catching up on what i lost in the 'interim years' haha!

ingon ahong amiga, " don't look for love, let it come to you "

if not, okey lang pod.

i'm open to whatever God's plan is for me in my life.

he's the captain of my soul. so..whatever He wills..He wills...8)

yeheeey!  after the earthquake and typhoon yolanda, this is one good news, lorenz.

you gave yourself time to mourn your "loss"; didn't jump from one relationship to another.  and now you sound like you're out of the morass.  way to go!

your emotional maturity is admirable.  i can't help but believe you and taga tigbao are of the same caliber. :)

Truly, my dearest Tita, there is no problem that Our Dear Blessed Mother Mary cannot aid us in. She strengthens our prayers to the Most High God, the Lord Jesus Christ. She amplifies our prayers to the ears of her Divine Son. It is through prayers for the intercession of Mother Mary , and through her healing prayers , that I was able to get past my past relationship. Prayer, as well as a a contemplative introspection of my own experiences, weaknesses was therapeutic for me. There is a time to mourn, but there is also a time to be joyful, and relish in God's plans to prosper us. So, here is to the open waters, which we have to chart , to find our way. However, may we always, truly, turn to the Fatherly Love and Care of the Most High God, who sends to us angels and the aid of the saints.

:)

I pray, dear sister in Christ, that you don't dwell too much on these intricacies of work. Put your worries to Christ. These challenges that are sent to us help to build us, to mold us, for the betterment of our souls and spirit tho at times it may seem to the contrary.

Don't forget to ask the intercession of Our Dear Holy Mother Mary... ;)

God Bless you, dear sister Jenneth. ;D

yup yup! powerful kaayo na. you know what also works? the intercessionary prayer to St. Philomena. A while back, there was a person from work who used to taunt me and some other people. I prayed for the intercession of St. Philomena to stop this person's taunts, and you know what? in time this person really changed. Now we're friends at work. As if na wa ba ang malis sa kadtong tawhana. The saints really are powerful! ;D

O Glorious Virgin and Martyr, beloved of God, Saint Philomena! I rejoice with thee in the power which God gave thee for the glory of His Name, for the edification His Church, and to reward the merits of thy life and death. I rejoice to see thee so great, so pure, so generous, so faithful to Jesus Christ, and to His Gospel, and so splendidly rewarded in Heaven, and on earth. Attracted by thy example to the practice of solid virtue full of hope at the sight of thy recompense granted to thy merits. I resolve to follow thee in avoiding all evil and in fully obeying what God commands. Help me, O great Saint by thy powerful intercession. Obtain for me particularly, a purity inviolable forever, a strength of soul always invincible in every kind of assault, a generosity which denies no sacrifice to God, and a love as strong as death for the Faith of Jesus Christ, for the Holy Roman Church and for Our Holy Father, the Father of all the Faithful, the Shepherd of shepherds and of their flocks, the Vicar of Jesus Christ over all the world.

With all the fervor of my soul, I implore these graces from thee, and, in addition, I ask these other benefits from thee with equal confidence in obtaining them through thy powerful intercession. (Here tell Saint Philomena what you need, with simplicity, confidence and humility).

Surely that God so good for Whom thou didst give thy blood and thy life that God so good Who is so generous to thee and through thy mediation, so generous with gifts and favors to us, that God so good Who has loved me even unto dying for me, even unto giving me Himself under the Eucharistic appearances, surely He will never be deaf to thy prayers, nor to my appeals, unless it be that He Himself is in some different way seeking to do me good. Full of confidence, I place all my trust in Him and in thee. Amen

A prayer for daily help in all troubles, worries, and anxieties. St. Philomena will intercede, no matter what.

Daily Prayer for Intercession

We beseech Thee, O Lord, to grant us the pardon of our sins by the intercession of Saint , virgin and martyr, who was always pleasing in Thy sight by her eminent chastity and by the profession of every virtue. Amen.

Illustrious virgin and martyr, Saint Philomena, behold me prostrate before the throne whereupon it has pleased the Most Holy Trinity to place thee. Full of confidence in thy protection, I entreat thee to intercede for me with God, from the heights of Heaven deign to cast a glance upon thy humble client! Spouse of Christ, sustain me in suffering, fortify me in temptation, protect me in the dangers surrounding me, obtain for me the graces necessary to me, and in particular
(Here specify your petition).

Above all, assist me at the hour of my death. Saint Philomena, powerful with God, pray for us. Amen.

O God, Most Holy Trinity, we thank Thee for the graces Thou didst bestow upon the Blessed Virgin Mary, and upon Thy handmaid Philomena, through whose intercession we implore Thy Mercy. Amen.

An Inspirational Prayer

Do not look forward to what may happen
tomorrow; the same everlasting Father who cares
for you today will take care of you tomorrow and
every day. Either He will shield you from suffering,
or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it.
Be at peace, then. Put aside all anxious thoughts and
imaginations, and say continually: "The Lord is my
strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in Him
and I am helped. He is not only with me but in me,
and I in Him."

St. Francis de Sales

hope your holidays were great and meaningful, loll.

dia ko, nalipong pa sa packing.  after cebu packing, manila packing na pod.  moving on to another country in a month or so.  no permanent address tawon ko.  sige lang, i won't rue my life.  others would find it privileged kay sigeg balhin-balhin, until retirement ni banana republic pohon, hehe.  but something in me says nga lami baya pod nga permanente ug home so we can appreciate orchids.  well, the other man's grass is always greener...

Waking up today (ugma kung itugot) is blessing enough to appreciate and enjoy :)

thanks for the prayers, loll and chigs.

i know that this is a myth; way beyond science.  ambot ba ngano intawon nga my oldest cat in cebu, at 11 years old, naa tawoy cancerous tumor.  the vet had told me to just give her the best to ease the pain.  di na ma-operahan kay more than 5 years old na kuno, lisod na.  human na kog hilak.  nitugon na lang ko nga kun maglisod na gani, bring her to the vet and have her put down painlessly.

they say that pets save humans by taking some of the sting of their diseases away.  naluoy tawon pag-ayo akong sister sa among iring.  (my sister is with my cats more than i am.)

this is not the first time.  the years have shown me that even if all our pets were actually mine, every time my sister was hospitalized, a dog or a cat also got sick. :(

Unsay gi bati ni Dr. Lorenzo? Hmm, the long hours of work and the arrival of a new class into my schedule has kept me quite inundated with all these quandries , these foibles in this vale of tears. O how nice it must be being a rich derelict living off one's pension or huge swathes of hoarded gold. But a las, i am but a poor , working man. Where one must work to survive! he he!

Got that off my chest.  :D

harrowing here now.  while i hold respect for fiestas and local culture, it's the sound of squealing pigs being slaughtered that keeps me away from such celebrations.

today i decided against my usual hotel stay to escape our place; too tired to go out and i don't exactly relish checking into a hotel without the banana republic, that's why.

i did all i could to keep the torturing cacophony out--plugging my ears with earphones to listen to music, locking myself in the bathroom where i kept the faucet on in full force... still i heard those dying pigs.  next time, maybe it might be best to stay underwater...

i hope to see the day when our authorities will disallow the slaughter of pigs outside the abattoir, kindly, please, and make those poor animals' terrifying death as sudden and painless as possible.

ikaw bay ihawon nga fully conscious, lalim ba. :(

very much like my niece who's also a medical intern.  she's been crying over the pressures of her job and the needed medical research papers for which she hardly has the time... sleeplessness, too many emergency surgeries, angry patients, alone in the wee morning hours, all the works.  she said she wouldn't mind forgetting about becoming a surgeon because selling cooked bananas at the sidewalk seems like a better career.

hold on, hold on, i said.  all careers have their pressures.  one can't sell bananas during typhoons.  midlife crisis?  fine.  after this personal storm, you'll end up only as either odysseus or aeneas--back to where you belong or out into the unknown to discover new worlds.  and either way is great.  bongga, she answered.  i believe she felt good soon after.

lorenz, i might as well be talking with you. :)

so i've been reading all i could about goiter, doing the medical research for my niece.  she said all of them similarly situated have their own backup researchers and writers anyway, so she might as well have the "best" (aherm, call it beating her own drums.  what a way to make me do something for her, hehehe, wise girl.)  yes, i'm writing her research paper for her; studying and defending it is up to her.  and she's feeling on top of the world now.

funny, i woke up with a painful throat.  this goiter thing is getting into me... i thought i'll end up as a goiter expert.  turns out it's my throat that caught the expertise. ::)

How kind are you to help your niece. Know that it brings a sense of relief in knowing someone cares and offers to assist in whatever way. Its unbelievable how much work is placed on a medical doctor, let alone, those who proceed into research, where there is so much focus on collaborative work. I raise my cup of coffee to her, as one doctor to another. Tell her that these are all part of the "beautiful struggles."

Well, at least that's what I remind myself when I have moments of doubt and say, "why am i doing all this for?". All for the Glory of God, and to the dispensation of my skill for the benefit of my brethren who need of my arts. Remind your niece that. As a surgeon, she has a lot of responsibilities and a sacred one at that-- to be, literally, the hand that saves those who have entrusted their health and care unto her. This is part of the collaborative dynamic between the physician and patient relationship.

The path of a doctor is never an easy one. But by God's Grace, if all the struggles we endure will allow us to provide care for the patient, to ease their sufferings, then by goodness,...let the doctor struggle all the more. And in humility let the doctor know that we are under protection of the Divine Physician himself, Christ Jesus.

Truly, Tita, bless your heart for helping your niece. And let me reiterate my many thanks for the times you have helped me edit my papers here. :)

Semper,
Lorenzo

I just submitted another doctoral paper. I was working on that paper for the past week, and Thanks God I finished it today and capped it at 26 pages. Now, here is to Dr. Mark finding it satisfactory. The topic was on individual coaching, group coaching and organizational consultation within the health care administrative spectrum.

These past few weeks have been very busy for me. Everyday from Monday to Friday I go to the hospital from 7 am till 5pm. Then on Monday and Wednesday i teach math for health care professionals at one of the city colleges in chicago from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Topic that i taught today was on calculation of anion gap, serum osmolality, calculated osmolar gap, and medical conversion units. My students, who are all enrolled in the BSN / RN program were whining about why they need to calculate anion gaps.

I told them, "You want to be a nurse, the dispenser of medications and the hand of the physician's order. With that role comes great responsibility. If you cannot calculate simple drug calculations, you can be a liability to the lives of the patients and to the will of the physician whom you will work with."

They ceased their whining immediately.

And I said to them, "From now on till the end of this course, I will not permit any one of you to use calculators."

"I want the best, so I expect the best out of you nursing students."

I hope i wasn't too hard. But, in my opinion, with such a role of a Registered Nurse, one has to master these skills. I hope they understand I am doing this out of Love for them.

----

I had a long day. I feel so tired. But I take comfort in my relaxing night today. God is Good.

i am addressing this to mobile phone servers in the philippines with the hope that one, even just one, employee of these servers get to read this.  and i mean GLOBE, SMART, and SUN. >:(

DO YOU REALIZE THAT YOUR PESKY UNWANTED ADS THAT YOU TEXT, UNBIDDEN, TO YOUR CLIENTS, ARE THE BIGGEST TURNOFFS OF THIS DIGITAL AGE?

oh, i've tried those suggested numbers that we're supposed to contact if we didn't want any more ads (or announcements or some other euphemism), but still i keep getting these pesky messages disguised as coming from another number or another program or gimmick from these servers.

HEY, I'M PAYING FOR YOUR SERVICES!  MUST YOU FREELOAD ON MY PAYMENT, INVADE MY PRIVACY, AND RATTLE MY PEACE JUST SO YOU CAN BLOAT YOUR PROFITS?

one thing with this digital age is that basic manners and respect for paying customers have become strange words for those who profit the most from it.

the truth about these servers is that a text message costs only .35 centavos.  they charge 1 peso.  fine, they have facilities to maintain, employees to pay, and profits to protect.  but it looks like they are increasing that 1 peso to 5 pesos through these ads... greed knows no bounds. >:(

some years back, i got a text in my roaming number congratulating me for winning a 6-figure money prize because my mobile number had been chosen among millions of numbers... too good to be true.  i wasn't born yesterday but on the other day, hehehe.

i take care to stress here that it did not come from the server but from a conman (servers use only 4 digits; the text that i received came from an 11-digit number sent by a lawyer, kuno.)

it was too good to pass up.  "congratulations!"  i answered back.  "you just won the privilege of claiming my prize.  go ahead, it's all yours."  that made my day.  i hoped it made the conman's too.
