Analysis of The Aged Quote
« on: December 11, 2008, 07:04:03 PM »
Last night I attended the graduating ceremonies for the 2nd Year Medical Students. As they completed their 2nd year and finished their Basic Sciences. Theory is finished. They will now proceed into the Clinical Phase of 3rd and 4th year Medicine. Where students become Physicians.

In the closing ceremonies, the students were each, individually, enrobed and clothed with the Sanctified White Coat of the Physician. And after each student received his or her white coat, the 2nd year Batch ushered the Ancient Hippocratic Oath.

As I listened to the entire class recite, I could feel the hairs in my back rise. It was a truly Powerful Experience.

The Hippocratic Quote:

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

A friend of mine, Jason, who spoke in the final ceremonies pointed something out that touched me, though sometimes I do not show it.

He said, and I am but paraphrasing: We have the Power to Save Life and Take Life. If we save life, then give thanks, may our hands continue to save, and to heal. But if ever we were to loose a patient, if life slipped our hands, then let us be strong enough to move on. For Medicine is not a personal profession, but is ultimately, for the good of the public. The Physician is, ultimately, a public servant.

And as I pondered this, I must concur with his statement. Only in Medicine. Where one has the Power of Life and Death. To Save and Give Life, as well as Take Life.

Secondly,

I do, personally, find it very touching to hear such words from colleagues. I could not prevent tears from falling from my eyes when I saw some of my colleagues who were recieving their white coat and reciting the Oath. Many of whom, who I have great respect for, crying very hard.

Especially individuals such as Jasmine, Irys, Jason, Devin and many more, who I've seen in the library and the student lounge till the wee hours of the morning. Toiling in their studies and keeping me company at night there. Their struggles, their beautiful struggles, their toil, sweat and blood paid off.

I pray that God Almighty guide them in their 3rd and 4th years, where they will be doing clinical rotations throughout the USA in affiliated Teaching Hospitals. Many of whom will be doing rotations in Chicago, NYC, Baltimore, Tennessee, Atlanta, etc. May their prognosis' and diagnosis' be accurate, may their backs be firm, and the Grace of God be with them till the very end.

May they walk in the same footsteps of the Greatest Physician of them All, Christ Jesus. The Divine Physician.

This I ask, In Jesus' Name.

Lorenzo, that closing ceremony is not the end but an acceptance of a responsibility.

An acceptance to become an instrument of God.

It was indeed a happy moment for the world to have new batch of lifesavers and everyone knows the level of dedication an American professional is having.

Hope that some of them will go abroad and help underprivileged nations.

I will miss my friend Jason, who will begin his Family Practice Clinical Rotation in the coming months. He will be based in Baltimore, Maryland. And others will be based in Chicago.

I, too, hope that many of them will join organizations such as "Doctor's Without Borders".
