that is why i never understood how doctors manage to keep sane with such lack of sleep.
i think we're just conditioned into this. this conditioning starts in 2nd year of medical school when med students complete their grand rounds and clinical rotations. the capstone is during the internship years where it is required for interns to complete a 36 hour on-call every week. at first, the first on-call is back-breaking and exhausting. after time, one gets used to it. doctors also find ways to keep them busy, and also can make use of 'mini-naps' by necessity. for example, when i'm on a 36-hour on-call, im entitled to a 3 hour 'sleep' after the 24th hour of on-call. that 3 hours is very refreshing. in fact , even 30 minutes of sleep can help refresh.
prior to 1990, doctors were mandated to complete 72-hour on-calls once a week. now, in the united states, they changed that to 36 hours for the health of the doctor and also the patients.
however, i think in the philippines, doctors still perform 72 hour on-calls during their internship and residency years. mao na i have nothing but respect and awe at the doctors who are a product of Philippine medical schools.
