Balitaw
« on: January 18, 2012, 11:02:09 AM »
The balitaw is an extemporaneous exchange of love verses between a man and a woman. Danced and mimed, it is accompanied by a song, or the dancers themselves sing, improvising the steps and verses. It may last for hours, ending with the woman accepting or rejecting the man's suit. The balitaw is found mainly in the Tagalog and Visayan regions.

In words which may be humorous and full of energy, the typical Visayan balitaw speaks of all domestic phases of life, from love and courtship, marriage and separation, gambling and employment, child rearing, envious neighbors, to the dignity of labor. -- http://jayars.tripod.com/

Example of Balitaw Lyrics

Balitaw Sa Paghangyo Sa Gugma

MAN: Maayong gabi-i mga kahigala-an,
Pamati kay amo nga awiton,
Kay sama sa tingog sa kalanggaman
Nga mabati ninyo sa kabuntagon.
Day, ang pagsubang sa adlaw sa kabuntagon
Ang kangitngit nga tanan mihayag,
Sa imong kaambong
Ang kasingkasing ko nabihag.

WOMAN: Dong, kining akong kaanyag
Ako ra kining kaugalingon.
Ug pananglit ikaw nabihag,
Unsay labut ko sa imong dangaton.

MAN: Day, tinuod wala kay kalabutan,
Tinuod nga wala mo ako sugo-a,
Kay ang kaibog ko kanimo guikan
Kanimo ko gayud usab panilnga.

WOMAN: Dong, ngano nga ako'y imong panilngan,
Unsa may utang ko kanimo?
Ngano nga ako'y imong pasanginlan,
Nga imo ra man kanang gusto?

MAN: Day, dili man utang ang gui ingon ko kanimo,
Ug dili sinugo lang ako sa akong kaibug.
Panimpalad lang kini ug kaluy-an mo
Kay usahay dili ako mahikatulog.

WOMAN: Dong, aron mo gayud hisayran
Timan-i aron dili ka malimot,
Bisan unsay imong dangatan
Para kanako wala kay mapa-abut.
