Ang Stereotype Sa Mga Espanyol
« on: October 28, 2009, 01:58:16 AM »
In a discussion I had with my mother recently, I found out that my great-grandfather was a Castillo (Spaniard) who settled in present day Valencia-Garcia Hernandez region, he was a merchant and came from Southern Spain. It is interesting to learn about one's history and as I discussed more about our geneology, I asked my mother about Lolo. Then in my father's side, his great-grandfather, who was the Provincial Treasurer of Bohol during the Spanish period, whose name was: Don. Execal De Torrero. He himself was also a Castillo from Nueva Espana (present day Mexico). Apparently, the stereotype of the mga Castilla (Spaniards) were that they were very strict, and very hardcore in their policies.

Its rather interesting learning about personal geneology and family history and at the same time applying that to historical analysis of the Spanish Empire and its presence in Latin America and in the Philippine Archipelago. Quite two-dimensional in analysis. Love it.

I also found out that my great-Lolo was very stricto, he was a merchant in his day, but at the same time, was also a family man, who had familial objections. The Spanish elite were also laborious with the Filipino Natives, as from what I hear. It was a classed society. With all the pros and cons of classed society. It's interesting to hear about it, especially when it affects one personally.

I just wanted to know what is the Boholano's View of the Spanish and the stereotypes that our ancestors proliferated about the Spaniards during the colonial period. Or if any of you have Spanish ancestry, do you know any history about your relatives? What they did, and where were they from?

I myself am trying to find out more about my family's geneology. Perhaps we can all help each other out in this process.
Advanced Thanks!
