A Book on Bisayan Fiction
« on: December 09, 2008, 07:44:57 PM »
“Ang Gakit ni Noebong ug Ubang mga Sugilanon”, a book on Cebuano fiction by Satur P. Apoyon, former Davao City bureau chief of the Philippines News Agency (PNA), was launched by the Davao Writers Guild, Inc. and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) on Saturday afternoon here.

The 5 x 8.5-inch 96-page book contains l3 of the more than 60 published short stories in the Cebuano language.

Apoyon has churned out the 13 stories since l955 up to mid-2008.

Aside from the lead story, the rest of the contents are “Mga Gutom”, “Dili Alang Kang David ang Baboy-ihalas”, “Ang Jihad ni Hadji Aribani”, “Ang Sakit ni Mystica Brillante”, “Ang Tinagoan ni Pocholo”, “Ang Dagon ni Atorni Agaton”, “Ang Magtiayon sa Bakilid”, “Gumikan sa Iyang Baroganan”, “Anak sa Wakwak”, “Timawi”, “Si Baldo ug ang Manok ni Mano Tasyo” and “Si Bandoyong ug ang Kataposang Lasang”.

“Ang Gakit ni Noebong” (The Raft of Noebong) is the modern version of Noah’s ark in Biblical times. Noebong’s family and some livestock were saved by the huge bamboo raft when the futuristic deluge came to pass in the upstream of the northwestern borders of Davao City with North Cotabato and Bukidnon following severe forest denudation and climate change.

The all-Cebuano anthology could be the first of its kind in Davao.

University of the Philippines (UP)-Mindanao Professor Ricardo de Ungria, DWG founder and president, has recommended the book project to the NCCA for funding.

De Ungria is the current chairman of the NCCA Literary Arts Committee and also heads the Subcomission on the Arts toward the next two years.

De Ungria, in his inspirational talk at the launching program, encouraged provincial writers to compile their works for eventual submission for funding to the NCCA through his committee.

Aside from “Gakit”, “Davao Harvest II”, a multi-authored book by DWG with funding support by NCCA, was also launched in the same occasion held at the newly inaugurated Museo Davao along Magallanes St. here.

The NCCA was represented in the twin launching program by Mylene Urizza, in-charge on visual and literary projects of the commission based at Intramuros, Manila.

Among the DWG stalwarts who graced the affair were multi-awarded English and Cebuano fictionist Macario D. Tiu, Don Pagusara, Tita Lacambra Ayala, Aida Rivera-Ford and Josefina C. Tejada.
