History of Bilar, Bohol
« on: June 20, 2007, 01:18:51 PM »
Bilar is an interior town northeast of Loboc. This town used to occupy a big area and included what are now known as the municipalities of Sevilla, Batuan and Carmen. They were formerly sitios of this municipality. In 1879, it had a population 5,669. The term "bilar" is a native word from the infinitive "nagbilad". During the Spanish regime, the Spaniards, in their effort to spread Christianity, toured the interior villages and somehow chanced to pass a plateau where a group of women were drying palay.

When the women were asked as to the name of the place, the immediate reply was "nagbilad", meaning drying, thinking that the foreigners were asking their activity. The Spaniards shorten the term to "bilad" and later on to "bilar" due to the difficulty in pronouncing the term. By virtue of a royal decree, the name Bilar was adopted as the official name of the municipality.(the provincial government file)

Allow me to make comment regarding the story that Bilar town was derived from the word “bilad”.

In my opinion, this is misleading to real history and irrational.

First of all “bilad” is a tagalog translation for a visayan word “bulad” means dried. However, we Boholanos pronounce it as “buwad” which sounds very differently from Bilar.

I theorized that Bilar town was named after “Elvillar (Basque: Bilar)” a town and municipality located in the province of Álava, in the Basque Country, northern Spain.

Many of our towns were named after Spanish places or words like Sevilla, Alburquerqe, Valencia…etc.

But naming Bilar after bilad is absurd….

Hi Macky,

The history was culled from Provincial Government files.

I think you're right. The term is preposterous.

I will research more on this issue.

Thanks for joining us.

Thanks Mike,

U R really a Boholano who loves quality and perfection. These are the qualities that makes us distinct from Cebuanos and other visayan tribes.

Compared to central America, we are the Cubans....cheers.
