Mail campaign eyed to protest Bohol activist’s slay

Militant groups are eyeing a letter-writing campaign to the government to register their outrage over the fatal shooting of a militant farmer in Bohol province last week.

Human rights group Karapatan also batted for the immediate formation of an independent fact-finding team to look into the killing of Mario Auxilio.

In a statement on the Stop the Killings website, it also reminded the government that it is a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Auxilio, 50, was gunned down after meeting with fishermen in Bien Unido town in Bohol province shortly before midnight of June 15. He succumbed to his wounds Sunday.

He was also secretary general of Bayan Muna in Bohol and a former regional coordinator of Bayan Muna in the Central Visayas region. He was also former secretary general of Hugpong sa mga Mag-uumang Bol-anon (HUMABOL), or the Association of Farmers in Bohol.

Karapatan, citing reports reaching it, identified the suspect as as Hilario Diola, a known military asset of the Army’s 15th Infantry Battalion.

Diola is a member of Alimaong “Holy Warriors," a vigilante group believed organized and supervised by the 15th IB.

In 2003, Auxilio was abducted and tortured by alleged agents of the Regional Intelligence and Investigation Division (RIID) of the PNP Regional Office in Cebu City.

Karapatan urged letter-senders to send their mail to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, presidential peace adviser Jesus Dureza, defense secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., justice secretary Raul Gonzalez, and Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chairwoman Purificacion Quisumbing.
