Starting after midnight on 16 Decemmber 2007 ( early morning Sunday ) church bells will be ringing very early in the morning until Christmas Day. It marks the beginning of the Christmas Novena or  "Simbang Gabii "
Over the generations, local Filipino faith communities have creatively adapted the Simbang Gabii.

I started going to "Simbang Gabi" in Tagbilaran when I was in grade school along with my Godparents but I never completed. Then, when I was in college, one of my friend Liza told me to make a wish and if I completed the entire simbang gabi mass from De.16 up to Christmas eve, it will come true. And so I did year before I graduated and yes indeed my wish came true. Years after that I tried again but didn't complete, can't help myself to get up that early everyday, obviously my wish never came real.
Then I moved to Manila to work, there was once where I completed simbang gabi again, I made a wish and again it came true, isn't something! That's how I truly believe the wonders of my faith every "simbang gabi". Unfortunately, where I live now, there's no series of "simbang gabi" only on Christmas Eve and that's about it. But that's ok, God knows the depth of my faith in him, so I'm ok!

Yup! i do agree that wishes were made to some of our patrons during the course of " Simbang Gabii " i also attended this Christmas Novena or Simbang Gabii but never completed at all, However there were signs of good lucks in our lives that were comimg in but un noticed, because it's our traditions we missed so much the said activity, for the maintime, what is important is that wherever we are, we have faith in Him.

I was so surprised to get my church bulletin last Sunday because there a news that the Filipino-American community has organized a Simbang Gabi.  This is the first time I heard of this in our community where mostly the parishioners are puti!  Unlike back home that we have our Simbang Gabi at dawn time, ours here would be at 7 p.m. with the exception of few days which is at 4:30 p.m.

para nako no, di man importante ug kanus a nataw si Jesus, what matters is that kitang mga tao mobati sa atong isigkataw isip mga binuhat Nija.  dili lamang sa panahon sa pasko, kundi sa tibook natong kinabuhi.  nga unta dili ta mapahitas on, nga unta kamao ta motan aw ug unsay gibati sa atong isigkataw, dili maghinakog, matinabangon, ug daghan pa.  dili kay magsige ra tag panglait, panghambog, etc.  share the love unta ta ilabi na karon kay Pasko.

korek, Amz!  Actually diay ang tinughong namo kay bahaw man na gibutangan either kape na made of mais or kadto bitaw dragon brand kay kon nilugaw na gibutangan ug tabliya, ang tawag namo kay champorado.  pareho ra dagway na ba? but you are exactly right; ang sikwati mao na hot choco made of tabliya jud.

Sorry if I will be out of topic here. This Church SAN ANTONIO DE PADUA caught my eye, can't help myself to recognize and tell you that my husband and I went to this church in Padua, Italy. This saint, San Antonio was also buried in that church. It has an astonishing.. magnificent.. decorated marble tomb and surrounded by pictures of children from different parts of the world maybe because he's The Saint for Children. I guess asking petitions for them. We bought a candle, right next to it and gave it to our friend back home who's son is surviving for brain tumor.
Just an unforgetable previledged to see St. Anthony of Padua for real.

Tonight, I had a very wonderful time of experiencing how it is to be in a Simbang Gabi again!  For the first time, our Holy Family Parish Filipino-American Community organized the 9-day Simbang Gabi! I wasn't able to go lastnight because of the Knights of Columbus Fund Raising dinner.

When I read last week about this Simbang Gabi, I kind of doubted if we had enough Filipino parishioners but I was so surprised tonight to be in our church packed with Filipinos (young and old) - some from other Parishes.  I spotted non-Filipino parishioners too!  The moment I opened the door, I heard the choir singing "Pasko, Pasko na naman ngayon..."  I was so overwhelmed it brought tears to my eyes!  Before the mass proper, a Filipino-English priest (yes, with cute accent like Simon Cowell of the American Idol but he is 100% Filipino from Ilocos) gave introduction about Simbang Gabi and why it is celebrated dating back from the 15th Century and is believed to be introduced by Spaniards to the Filipinos. Then came out the officiating priest - Father Jovi Rata, a young priest who is a true-blooded Bol-anon from Cogon, Tagbilaran City!  The whole mass was said mostly in Tagalog which was kind of difficult and I shamefully admit I am having a hard time knowing the response.  At the time when I was still in Manila, I made sure that I attend the English mass for ease of listening and understanding.  Anyway, it was so wonderful to hear a Bol-anon Priest saying a mass in Tagalog who also admitted at the start of the mass that he would try to speak Tagalog as much as he could, which he did.

After the mass, there was a reception.  I was told they were going to serve native food like biko, puto, etc. but I didn't stay anymore because I still had to attend to my guests. It was really a wonderful feeling to be in a Simbang Gabi which I almost thought that I was  back  home in the Philippines!

graz & ginger kantahan kuna lang kamo dinha para mawala ang imyong kamingaw or mag request nalang ta kay Mike xmas song.

This x'mas song was sung by our very own Jose Mari Chan.

Christmas in our Hearts
Jose Mari Chan

Whenever I see girls and boys
Selling lanterns on the streets,
I remember the Child
In the manger as He sleeps.

Wherever there are people
Giving gifts, exchanging cards,
I believe that Christmas
Is truly in their hearts.

Let's light our Christmas trees
For a bright tomorrow
Where nations are at peace
And all are one in God

Let's sing Merry Christmas
And a happy holiday,
This season may we never forget
The love we have for Jesus
Let Him be the One to guide us
As another new year starts
And may the spirit of Christmas
Be always in our hearts.

In every prayer and every song
The community unites,
Celebrating the birth
Of our Savior, Jesus Christ

Let love, like that starlight
On that first Christmas morn,
Lead us back to the manger
Where Christ the Child was born

So, come let us rejoice
Come and sing a Christmas carol
With one big joyful voice
Proclaim the name of the Lord!

Last night when I attended the Simbang Gabi, the first song I heard when I opened the door was "Ang Pasko ay sumapit..."  I still feel the same overwhelming feeling of being at home with all the Pinoys in the church and the Tagalog songs sang by the all-Pinoy Choir.  After the mass, we had agape.  We were served all kinds of pancit, biko, puto, etc.

Ang Pasko ay Sumapit Para kay grazie

Ang Pasko ay Sumapit
by: Filipino Christmas Carol

[[

Magandang Pasko at Manigong bagong Taon sa Inyong Lahat from Dexter Zafra Webmaster @ Ex-designz.net

Have a safe Holiday!

Ang Pasko ay sumapit
Tayo ay mangagsi-awit
Ng magagandang himig
Dahil sa ang Diyos ay pag-ibig
Nang si Kristo ay isilang
May tatlong haring nagsidalaw
At ang bawat isa
Ay nagsipaghandog ng tanging alay

Bagong taon ay magbagong-buhay
Nang lumigaya ang ating bayan
Tayo'y magsikap upang makamtan
Natin ang kasaganaan

Tayo'y mangagsi-awit
Habang ang mundo'y tahimik
Ang araw ay sumapit
Ng Sanggol na dulot ng langit
Tayo ay magmahalan
Ating sundin ang gintong aral
At magbuhat ngayon
Kahit hindi Pasko ay magbigayan

Salamat jamo, Brownman!  Ga sige nako'g kanta-kanta dire!

Continuation from the other days post:

What was more meaningful in that mass was it was officiated by 4 Filipino priests and they were chanting/singing like how our priests back home say the mass.  One of the four priest was again, Father Jovito Rata from Cogon, Tagbilaran.  The other priests were Father Pol Gumapong of Cagayan de Oro, Father Ron Marcelo and another Bisaya-speaking priest I forgot to get his name.  Father Gumapong was the lead officiating priest.  He did the sermon and it was so nice and he was funny pa jud!  One thing I couldn't forget what he said was that Jesus Christ came to the world as a baby thru Mama Mary and that was we commemorate during Christmas.  The third coming is what we are waiting pa to happen and what we always prepare but the second coming happens everyday.  He came thru us when we reach out to people to help.  If we do good things for other people, we let other people see Jesus Christ in us!

I remember sometime back, I helped an elderly couple who was denied access of the public bus because they didn't have enough money for fare.  I was so moved because the old man told his wife to just go ahead and he would just walk.  I didn't get up right away to help but I felt so bad the whole time because I should have had helped before the bus left.  I said better late than never so I went to the woman and gave her a whole booklet of bus tickets and a little money left in my wallet.  She looked at me like I was a strange creature from heaven then she looked up and said, Thank you, Lord! She hugged me and I felt like I was touched by God himself. Sus, di ba gud makahilak labi na pareho nko hilakon!  Sometimes when I help I wonder if maybe the one who is in need is in fact Jesus Christ manifesting to me...

Mr. Brownman, OT na ba ko?

Tonight, we concluded our Simbang Gabi.  As always, it was so overwhelming!  The church was so packed with Pinoy it looked like a high mass in Quiapo!  There were 7 priests who celebrated the mass, with just one Puti priest.  The lead priest, spoke three languages:  Tagalog, English and Spanish.

After the mass, we had a short procession with candles and singing and all and we went to the other building - The hall.  The place was adorned with Pinoy lanterns.  More priests came from neighboring parishes and even as far as the Bay Area.  We had program afterwards and of course, eating!  The priests also sang and there more than a dozen nuns from LA who did ala-Sister Act:  I will follow you!  That was really so amazing!  There were also dancing of tinikling, pandanggo, bango and more!  I had a blast tonight and more so, I felt so at home!

May all of us here in Tubag Bohol will have a very blessed Christmas and a New Year full of graces!

At the Simbang Gabi tonight:

I didn't get a right picture here but I will still share anyhow.  These are the other participating priests who sang at the party.  In the middle is very good friend, Father Cormac Lacre of Jagna.
