Social Justice

Matthew 25:31-46:

"When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

‘Justice’ is one of those words that can be misused or, worse, abused. Too often, justice is equated with revenge and ignores the real possibility of creating further injustice by our hardened attitudes. Likewise, ‘social justice’ is often equated with ensuring that everyone receives the same of everything, but that is not how God sees it. When God looks upon His creation it is with eyes of love that see everyone as equal in His sight, irrespective of colour, creed, belief, status, wealth, health, education, background. When we look, for example, at what we call 'terrorist activities' do we recognise the injustices that may underlie those activities? When one group of people murder another group of people, do we acknowledge the severe provocation under which they may have lived for more than a generation? That is not to condone their actions, but merely to suggest that the roots of justice must go deeper than we can see.

Social justice requires a complete change in attitudes. Until we can eradicate the causes of poverty in the world, until we can ensure that every person has access to fresh water, until every young person has the opportunity to learn to read and to write, until every individual has access to common justice, then there will always be a reason for dissent or dispute or war or other atrocity. (Nevertheless, we must also recognise that some atrocities are the result of mindless violence and simply a reflection of human evil.)  God has shared with us the abundance of His gifts; those gifts are not for our own personal benefit, but for the well-being and growth of His Kingdom. We are to use them charitably for the good of others, and humbly, accepting that they are gifts of God to His children.

The German Protestant churchman, Martin Niemoller, opposed the religious policies of Hitler's regime and was imprisoned from 1938 to 1945. Whilst in prison, he wrote this:

First they came for the Communists,
  and I didn’t speak up,
    because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
  and I didn’t speak up,
    because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
  and I didn’t speak up,
    because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.

We need more people nowadays to uphold social justice. Too many of our youth are become numb to this concept. Thanks for sharing this, Bai Hubag. I hope our readers take the message to heart.
