Extremely important city of rich Croatian history is Solin which combines important Croatian and early Christian cultural and historical heritage. Solin is situated northeast of the town Split, with whom he eventually grew into a single urban unit. Still, it is an independent local unit, and its name comes from the old Latin name - Salona.
Early Christian history
However, Solin also had an important role in the early Christian history, and the river Jadro which flows through the town is even called Croatian Jordan. In fact, an island called Lady's islet is situated on the river and it is the location of the first christening in Croatia. Queen Jelena raised two churches there, one of the Blessed Virgin Mary and one of St. Stephen. The remains of the basilica of St. Peter and Moses, today called Hollow Church, were also founded there and it is a place where the Croatian king Zvonimir was crowned. Lady's islet is the oldest shrine in Croatia, there was held a youth meeting with Pope John Paul II. during his visit to Croatia.
