Meralco to source mid-merit requirements from coal-fired power plantsMANILA, June 1 (PNA) -- Manila Electric Co. president and chief executive officer Oscar Reyes said the company plans to source its future mid-merit requirements from coal-fired power plants.
"The coal plants can be more responsive to some degree of cycling. That's the new technology -- they also serve baseload and to some extent spinning cycling could give mid merit spacing," Reyes said when asked on the company's contracting for mid-merit requirements in a press conference Tuesday.
A grid's baseload requirement is usually sourced from coal-fired power plants, while the mid-merit power requirement is commonly supplied by natural gas-fired power plants.
Meralco filed several power supply agreements from coal-fired power generators, which has a total capacity of 3,551 megawatts, to the Energy Regulatory Commission last April 29.
Under the contracts, the distribution utility will source 225 MW from Redondo Peninsula Energy Inc., up to 400 MW from St. Raphael Power Generation Corp., 1,200 MW from Atimonan One Energy Inc., up to 528 MW from Central Luzon Premiere Power Corp., up to 528 MW from Mariveles Power Generation Corp., up to 70 MW from Panay Energy Development Corp. and 600 MW from Global Luzon Energy Development Corp.
Meralco senior vice president Alfredo Panlilio earlier said the power plants will start operations by 2020, except for Panay Energy Development Corp. that will start delivering a capacity of 28 MW by September 2016. He also noted most of the company's existing power supply agreements will expire from 2019-2020.
The Manila Electric Co. is a distribution utility, operating in Luzon with more than 5.8 million customers. (PNA)
