The choice of the Philippines as the next venue for the congress was announced by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI during a video message at the conclusion of the previous Eucharistic congress held in Dublin in June 2012. He said in the video message, “I would like to invite you to join me in praying for God’s blessings upon the next International Eucharistic Congress, which will take place in 2016 in the city of Cebu!” “To the people of the Philippines I send warm greetings and an assurance of my closeness in prayer during the period of preparation for this great ecclesial gathering. I am confident that it will bring lasting spiritual renewal not only to them but to all the participants from across the globe.”

A message from the Pontifical Commission for International Eucharistic Congresses stated that “the celebration of the 51st International Eucharistic Congress in this Country (Philippines), the only one with a Catholic majority in Asian continent, is an important challenge to strengthen the missionary / evangelizing perspective as well as for identifying new ways in celebrating the Congresses themselves.”

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines expressed their desire that the upcoming Congress will deepen Eucharistic devotion in the country as well as prepare for the 500th Anniversary of the evangelization in the Philippines. Thus, the 51st International Eucharistic Congress, which will take place in Cebu, Philippines in 2016 will be a pause for commitment and a pause for prayer. -- http://iec2016.ph/

What is a Eucharistic Congress?

In the Roman Catholic church, a Eucharistic Congress is a gathering of clergy, religious, and laity to bear witness to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, which is an important Roman Catholic doctrine.

Congresses bring together people from a wide area, and typically involve large open-air Masses, adoration of the Eucharist (Blessed Sacrament), and other devotional ceremonies held over several days. Congresses may both refer to National (varies by country) and International Eucharistic Congresses.
The most recent International Eucharistic Congress was held in Dublin, Ireland in 2012 and the next congress will be held in Cebu, the Philippines in 2016. (wikipedia)

[Papal envoy Cardinal Charles Bo of Myanmar] called Filipinos the “beacon of Catholicism” to the world, saying that having a Philippine presence in any country means there will be Catholicism. Close to 10 million Filipinos live and work outside the Philippines, with most practicing their Catholic faith, often in countries that do not have majority Christian populations.

Bo remarked on the Philippine church and its people being “the only church in the world that welcomed” priests from his country, which he said was a “suffering church” for more than five decades under military rule.

– /EIM) (BANAT NEWS)
