http://www.tempo.com.ph/Manila, Philippines – Holy Week (Semana Santa) is a time for prayer, penance, reflection, and spiritual works. Cities and towns observe Holy Week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, with –Philippine Lenten customs –Visita Iglesia, Stations of the Cross, “Pabasa†(passion reading), and Seven Last Words.
As in past years, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) coordinate in peace and security measures, especially at bus terminals, airports, piers, train stations, churches, and pilgrimage sites. The Philippine Coast Guard beefs up security in ports and ferry terminals.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reactivates its “Lakbay Alalay†from March 24 to April 1, 2013, to assist motorists and commuters on the road. Motorists’ Assistance Teams are positioned at strategic locations along national highways to assist stranded motorists. The Department of Transportation and Communications’ (DOTC) “Oplan Ligtas Biyahe†assists stranded motorists and checks roadworthiness of public and private vehicles. Department of Health medical teams man first aid stations. The Bureau of Fire Protection assists agencies and volunteer groups.
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) deploys traffic enforcers along major thoroughfares, highways, and roads leading to and from bus terminals, seaports and domestic airports. It sets up command posts at entry points of expressways, in traffic choke points, as well as near churches. Metro Manila police patrol communities in coordination with tourist police and barangays councils.
