Gospel Of The Day
« on: June 07, 2009, 05:02:20 PM »
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 12:28-34.

One of the scribes, when he came forward and heard them disputing and saw how well he had answered them, asked him, "Which is the first of all the commandments?"
Jesus replied, "The first is this: 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.'
The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, 'He is One and there is no other than he.'
And 'to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself' is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
And when Jesus saw that (he) answered with understanding, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 28:16-20.

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 12:40-44

Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums.
A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.
Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury.
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood."

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 10:7-13.

As you go, make this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.
Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;
no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer deserves his keep.
Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave.
As you enter a house, wish it peace.
If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 14:12-16.22-26.

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?"
He sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him.
Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'
Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there."
The disciples then went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.
Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew 9:18-26

While Jesus was speaking, an official came forward,
knelt down before him, and said,
"My daughter has just died.
But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live."
Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples.
A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him
and touched the tassel on his cloak.
She said to herself, "If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured."
Jesus turned around and saw her, and said,
"Courage, daughter!  Your faith has saved you."
And from that hour the woman was cured.

When Jesus arrived at the official's house
and saw the flute players and the crowd who were making a commotion,
he said, "Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping."

And they ridiculed him.
When the crowd was put out, he came and took her by the hand,
and the little girl arose.
And news of this spread throughout all that land.

that is true, Taga Tigbao!

We, in our own individuality, are called to be hearers and doers of the Word of God. There is nothing, absolutley nothing wrong, in being a Layman. Priest and Laymen have very similar complementary roles. Both make up the Body of Christ, which is His Church.

So let us all hear with not only our ears, but with our hearts.

To hear His Word. And to live by His Word, to the best of our ability.

God Bless All of Us.
May His Word Burn In Our Hearts!

Have Faith!

Bay Lorenzo, para imo ning Salmo karong adlawa:

Salmo 33: 2-3

Line from the Gospel that struck me:

Sa unang pagbasa:

Genesis 41:57

- gitawag jud ta sa Ginoo, kaniadto pa ning tawaga sa niaging gospel. unta dili ta magpabungol-bungol kay matud pa NIJA, those who hear should better listen.

Humbling kaayo ning message, and very powerful one as it reminds us of what Christ demands of us. It shows to us not our own interpretation of what Jesus Is. He is not money, he is not luck, he is not natural occurances.

Christ Jesus is Absolute and Total Love. Above ALL Things. Seen and Unseen.

And though how Great and Powerful is Our Savior!!!!
His Heart of Hearts and Love of Loves is soo PURE!
How Mighty is The Lord, but it NEVER ceases to amaze me and to make me ponder that this Great Lord God of ours---who is Creator of All, Lord of All, has a heart that Loves.

Even the smallest of us, children, even babies that are unborn, he still Loves them. Completely and Absolutely.

----

Give Until It Hurts!

YES!

Did not Our Lord Jesus Christ give himself to the Cross?
And hurt it did, Amen!

Because he Loved us....
GIVE UNTIL IT HURTS!

Because HE DOES LOVE us!

:)

Christ Jesus, AMEN!

Ang bahin sa ebanghelyo karong adlawa:

Mateo 10:16

Pamati kamo!

Nalig-on, gilig-on ug pagalig-onon mi aning imong gipadangat kanamo. Daghang salamat uyamot.

Matthew 12:38-42
38 Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 He said to them in reply, “An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. 41 At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here. 42 At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.”

A SlAVE of EGyPT

“Leave us alone, let us serve the Egyptians…” – Exodus 14:12

When you see the word Egypt, what comes to mind? A pyramid, right?
Did you know that it is believed that the chosen people of God were among the slaves who built the pyramids?
So why is it that after being freed by God, they still wanted to return and serve the Egyptians?
This is because the Jews found their identity in Egypt. They had been used to living as slaves. When they say their names, “a slave of Egypt” follows as their title.
Each of us also have our own “Egypt.” The Egypt in us is a sin that keeps us from freeing our spirits to receive God’s promises.
We like going back to this Egypt.
Even if we know that we have been freed from sin, we still do it.
Even if we know there is a Promised Land waiting for us, we continue to serve that Egypt.
Maybe when we know who we really are, we will be free from the Egypt that enslaves us. Arun Gogna

Amen, i really like this gospel, my friend!

Lord, deliver us from our personal 'Egypt' that comes between our Love and Faith in You. Give us the strength to find and walk the right path, tho it be hard and filled with challenges and circumstances, let us walk in your ways and light, Jesus Have Mercy!

And give us the reassurance and JUSTIFICATION UNASSAILABLE, that through it all, you will never leave us.

For yours is the Power, The Honor and the Glory. Now and Forever.

HoW GRoSS NAmAN youR HEART!

“Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears...” – Matthew 13:15

Have you ever counseled anyone who asked your help but wasn’t ready to hear the truth? They come to you, so broken up and humbly asking for your advice. When you start speaking, it’s as if the Holy Spirit is speaking through you that you yourself are amazed. You thank God for using you as His mouthpiece to speak faith-filled words that will surely help that person. The next day, that person is back with the same sad tale. It’s as though he didn’t hear any of the wise words you said.
Did you ever think that that’s how we are to God every time we go to Him with our problems? “Father God, please transform my philandering boyfriend into a God-fearing man!” Then you hear this quiet voice within you that says, “Leave him. I have someone better for you.” Then you continue praying, “Please, can I talk to Mama Mary?”
If we really desire the best for our life, then it’s time we put hearing aids in our hearts so we can really hear God speaking to us. It’s time we let go of all our self-willed desires and allow Him to fill it with His desires. There is nothing more annoying to the devil than a heart that’s tuned to the Father’s voice. Ronna ledesma

REFLECTION:
Can you sincerely pray every day, “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening”?

1st READING

The Ten Commandments set out how we should relate to God (first three) and to one another (last seven). We need to be aware that it is not an easy thing to encapsulate the essence of a relationship with God in three simple laws. We need therefore to read between the lines, so to speak, in order to discover the full meaning and import of such laws. In other words, we cannot just deal literally with the laws. We need to be aware of their contextual development within a covenant relationship of love where God promises much to those who will live by this set of commandments and all they entail.

Exodus 20:1-17
1 In those days: God delivered all these commandments: 2 “I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. 3 You shall not have other gods besides me. 4 You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; 5 you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; 6 but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished him who takes his name in vain. 8 “Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. 9 Six days you may labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you. 11 In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you. 13 “You shall not kill. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything else that belongs to him.”

Psalm 19:8. 9. 10. 11
R: Lord, you have the words of everlasting life.
7 [8] The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. (R) 8 [9] The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye. (R) 9 [10] The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. (R) 10 [11] They are more precious than gold, than a heap of purest gold; sweeter also than syrup or honey from the comb. (R)

Do not be surprised when you discover that being a disciple of Jesus is not easy. All the saints discovered this truth and it failed to daunt them. They continued to give of their all and served God in the best and fullest way they could. The temptations  and difficulties that we will face will be many and varied as the parable tells us. The question is: “Do you have what it takes to overcome them all or are you going to succumb to one or another of them?” This is the ultimate question a disciple of Jesus must answer and the answer is not given in words but in the deeds of his or her life.

Matthew 13:18-23
18 Jesus said to his disciples: “Hear the parable of the sower. 19 The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. 20 The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. 21 But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. 22 The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. 23 But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”
15
my reflections
think: The temptations and difficulties that we will face in being a disciple of Jesus will be many and varied. Do you have what it takes to overcome them?

“… take up your cross, and follow me.” – Matthew 16:24

Had I followed my “own desires” I could have been a famous rocker. Or maybe a rich and powerful politician. Or a successful corporate executive. I actually had my chance in each of these fields. But no. I took up my cross and followed Jesus.
My budding singing and songwriting career I devoted to the music ministry of our community then and to my ministry now. My learned skill as a politician in dealing with different types of people, especially the  masses, I now use to bring people from all walks of life to the faith.
My lucrative position in the corporate world I left to become a fulltime preacher for the Lord.
Jesus said it. “If you want to follow Me, deny yourself and take up your cross.” But something’s amazing here.
Because denying myself and carrying my cross to follow Him gave me so much joy, freedom, blessing, love and fulfillment — more than what my own desires could have brought me.
Only the love of God could turn our crosses into our biggest blessings — our death into our resurrection!
Truly amazing! Alvin Barcelona

REFLECTION:
What things do you need to leave behind to follow Jesus? What crosses do you need to take up?

Lord, grant me the grace to deny myself, take up my cross and follow You so that I may discover the fullness of life. Amen.

Throughout history, God has demonstrated His love for His people by intervening in the lives of individuals or community of faith. There is no doubt as to God’s love for us. But the biggest problem is our willingness to humbly accept His love and allow it to form and transform our lives into His image. We were created in love to love, and our ultimate end is love. Let us open our hearts to God’s love today.

Deuteronomy 4:32-40
32 Moses said to the people: “Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other, ‘Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? 33 Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live? 34 Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, with his strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the LORD, your God, did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? 35 All this you were allowed to see that you might know the LORD is God and there is no other. 36 Out of the heavens he let you hear his voice to discipline you; on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard him speaking out of the fire. 37 For love of your fathers he chose their descendants and personally led you out of Egypt by his great power, 38 driving out of your way nations greater and mightier than you, so as to bring you in and to make their land your heritage, as it is today. 39 This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other. 40 You must keep his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever.”

P S A L M

Psalm 77:12-13. 14-15. 16 and 21
R: I remember the deeds of the Lord.
11 [12] I remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I remember your wonders of old. 12 [13] And I meditate on your works; your exploits I ponder. (R) 13 [14] O God, your way is holy; what great god is there like our God? 14 [15] You are the God who works wonders; among the peoples you have made known your power. (R) 15 [16] With your strong arm you redeemed your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. 20 [21] You led your people like a flock under the care of Moses and Aaron. (R)

G O S P E L

Do not believe anyone who says following Jesus as a disciple is going to be easy — it is NOT! Jesus makes it clear to His disciples that to follow Him is to choose the way of the cross. The socalled ‘Prosperity Gospel’ does the Kingdom of God no favor when it downplays the difficulties of living in Christ. This becomes evident when people get older and become subject to suffering. Their faith cannot provide any answer for them.

Matthew 16:24-28
24 Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? 27 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct. 28 Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

my reflections
think: We were created in love to love and our ultimate end is love.

liFe-(eX)chAnging decisions

Our Gospel reading today perhaps makes us think almost automatically of the great martyrs — those who denied their selves, took up their crosses and followed Jesus unto death. Truly, they gave up their lives for the Lord’s sake — and they in turn gained eternal life. Yet, there is more to Jesus’ words in the Gospel than just martyrdom. All those who undergo some kind of conversion in their lives also fall under what Jesus meant with His words. For example, the alcoholic who joins a support group and undergoes rehabilitation, the addicted gambler who is willing to pay the cost and spend time to overcome his compulsion, the lukewarm Catholic who joins a spiritual retreat hoping to recharge himself — all such people who make such life-changing decisions also “lose” their lives for Christ’s sake to find themselves again.
The process isn’t easy, of course. It is not without reason that Jesus speaks of denying one’s very self and taking up one’s cross. But the Lord Himself assures us of a sure reward: “He will repay everyone according to His conduct.” It is infinitely worth the cost because there is a decisive trade-off at stake: “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life?”
And so indeed these are life-changing decisions — quite literally (as a matter of fact), for lives are not only changed — nay, more, there is a great exchange: lives (physical lives) are given up, and life (eternal life) is gained. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
What area/s of your life need to be rehabilitated so you can find your true self again?

Lord, I lift up to You my _______________ (name here the areas of your life that need to be rehabilitated). Grant me the courage to take necessary actions that will lead to a better life.

The wicked say:
Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us;
he sets himself against our doings,
reproaches us for transgressions of the law
and charges us with violations of our training.
Let us see whether his words be true;
let us find out what will happen to him.
For if the just one be the son of God, God will defend him
and deliver him from the hand of his foes.
With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test
that we may have proof of his gentleness
and try his patience.
Let us condemn him to a shameful death;
for according to his own words, God will take care of him.

Today's Responsorial Psalm:

R. (6b)The Lord upholds my life.
O God, by your name save me,
and by your might defend my cause.
O God, hear my prayer;
hearken to the words of my mouth.
R. The Lord upholds my life.
For the haughty men have risen up against me,
the ruthless  seek my life;
they set not God before their eyes.
R. The Lord upholds my life.
Behold, God is my helper;
the Lord sustains my life.
Freely will I offer you sacrifice;
I will praise your name, O LORD, for its goodness.
R. The Lord upholds my life.

The promise of redemption can be found in the writings of all the prophets though it is often limited in its understanding. That is, until the coming of Jesus our understanding of salvation is somewhat limited. It is only when people were able to experience the presence of Jesus in person that the fullness of revelation came to humanity. It is up to us to continue to bring the knowledge of salvation to those who do not yet know it.

Malachi 3:13-20b
13 You have defied me in word, says the LORD, yet you ask, “What have we spoken against you?” 14 You have said, “It is vain to serve God, and what do we profit by keeping his command, and going about in penitential dress in awe of the LORD of hosts? 15 Rather must we call the proud blessed; for indeed evildoers prosper, and even tempt God with impunity.” 16 Then they who fear the LORD spoke with one another, and the LORD listened attentively; and a record book was written before him of those who fear the LORD and trust in his name. 17 And they shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my own special possession, on the day I take action. And I will have compassion on them, as a man has compassion on his son who serves him. 18 Then you will again see the distinction between the just and the wicked; between him who serves God, and him who does not serve him. 19 For lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire, leaving them neither root nor branch, says the LORD of hosts. 20 But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays.

P S A L M

Psalm 1:1-2. 3. 4 and 6
R: Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
1 Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, 2 but delights in the law of the LORD and meditates on his law day and night. (R) 3 He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves never fade. Whatever he does, prospers. (R) 4 Not so the wicked, not so; they are like chaff which the wind drives away. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes. (R)

G O S P E L

Sometimes someone repeats a question to us to be sure that he has heard us right in the first instance. Sometimes God asks us to persevere in seeking His blessing so that He is sure that we really want whatever it is that we are asking Him to provide for us. Perseverance in prayer is a principle espoused by all the saints; none of them tells us we should ask once and leave it at that! Let us knock, seek, and search until we find what we are looking for, and if it is necessary for our salvation we can be sure that it is not too far off.

Luke 11:5-13
5 And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,’ 7 and he says in reply from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. 9 “And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? 12 Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? 13 If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

Sometimes it is our duty to correct others. This is not a license to become a busybody, but a duty to be exercised with all discernment, wisdom, mercy and compassion. It is not an easy thing to either give or receive correction; however, it is an essential aspect of discipleship that is often neglected.

Joel 1:13-15; 2: 1-2
13 Gird yourselves and weep, O priests! Wail, O ministers of the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God! The house of your God is deprived of offering and libation. 14 Proclaim a fast, call an assembly; gather the elders, all who dwell in the land, into the house of the LORD, your God, and cry to the LORD! 15 Alas, the day! For near is the day of the LORD, and it comes as ruin from the Almighty. 2: 1 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all who dwell in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming; 2 Yes, it is near, a day of darkness and of gloom, a day of clouds and somberness! Like dawn spreading over the mountains, a people numerous and mighty! Their like has not been from of old, nor will it be after them, even to the years of distant generations.

P S A L M

Psalm 9:2-3. 6 and 16. 8-9
R: The Lord will judge the world with justice.
1 [2] I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart; I will declare all your wondrous deeds. 2 [3] I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, Most High. (R) 5 [6] You rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; their name you blotted out forever and ever. 15 [16] The nations are sunk in the pit they have made; in the snare they set, their foot is caught. (R) 7 [8] But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has set up his throne for judgment. 8 [9] He judges the world with justice; he governs the peoples with equity. (R)

G O S P E L

There is an ongoing battle between the powers of good and evil, but it is one whose destiny is already determined if only we invoke the Name of Jesus and surrender our lives to the victory He offers us through His cross. The only way the devil can prevail is if we insist on fighting against him with our own strength rather than that of Jesus or the Holy Spirit. This is what it means to embrace the fruits of our Baptism — to live in the freedom and victory of the sons and daughters of God.

Luke 11:15-26
15 When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” 16 Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. 17 But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. 18 And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. 19 If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that  drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 24 “When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none, it says, ‘I shall return to my home from which I came.’ 25 But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that person is worse than the first.”

Joel tells us that there is a time of judgment for everyone; for nations and individuals alike. This ought to be a consolation to us as we do not have to spend time and effort worrying about this matter of judgment. Let us just leave it in the hands of God who is a God of both mercy and justice. I am sure that He knows the best way to deal with the various issues and situations that are present in the world today.

Joel 4:12-21
12 Thus says the LORD: Let the nations bestir themselves and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit in judgment upon all the neighboring nations. 13 Apply the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come and tread, for the wine press is full; the vats overflow, for great is their malice. 14 Crowd upon crowd in the valley of decision; for near is the day of the LORD in the valley of decision. 15 Sun and moon are darkened, and the stars withhold their brightness. 16 The LORD roars from Zion, and from Jerusalem raises his voice; the heavens and the earth quake, but the LORD is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the men of Israel. 17 Then shall you know that I, the LORD, am your God, dwelling on Zion, my holy mountain; Jerusalem shall be holy, and strangers shall pass through her no more. 18 And then, on that day, the mountains shall drip new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk; and the channels of Judah shall flow with water: a fountain shall issue from the house of the LORD, to water the Valley of Shittim. 19 Egypt shall be a waste, and Edom a desert waste, because of violence done to the people of Judah, because they shed innocent blood in their land. 20 But Judah shall abide forever, and Jerusalem for all generations. 21 I will avenge their blood, and not leave it unpunished. The LORD dwells in Zion.

P S A L M

Psalm 97:1-2. 5-6. 11-12
R: Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
1 The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice; let the many isles be glad. 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him, justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne. (R) 5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory. (R) 11 Light dawns for the just; and gladness, for the upright of heart. 12 Be glad in the LORD, you just, and give thanks to his holy name. (R)

G O S P E L

Jewishness was measured by one’s bloodlines. “Christian-ness” will be measured by one’s obedience to the Word of God. Christianity has nothing to do with who your father and mother are except that if they happened to be Christians, they hopefully brought you up as one, too. The universality claimed by the Christian message is a direct result of its claim for truth, and that it is only through Jesus Christ that anyone can be saved. These are extraordinary claims. Let us live them to the full in order to justify them.

Luke 11:27-28
27 While he was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” 28 He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”

Yesterdays Readings (October 11, 2009)

1st READING

Solomon prayed for the gift of wisdom and was given it in abundance — such abundance that it became the talking point of the known world and people came from near and far to consult him. I find it very difficult to see how God could possibly reject a sincere request for wisdom as it is virtually impossible to use this gift in a way that would be  detrimental to the Kingdom of God. Let us all seek to grow in the wisdom of God each day through prayer and reflection upon His Word and the teachings of the Church.

Wisdom 7:7-11
7 I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. 8 I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her, 9 nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. 10 Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. 11 Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands.

P S A L M

Psalm 90:12-13. 14-15. 16-17 (14)
R: Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. 13 Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! (R) 14 Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. 15 Make us glad, for the days when you afflicted us, for the years when we saw evil. (R) 16 Let your work be seen by your servants and your glory by their children; 17 and may the gracious care of the Lord our God be ours; prosper the work of our hands for us! Prosper the work of our hands! (R)

Never underestimate the power of the Word of God. The author of this letter has no doubt as to the power of the Word of God to lead and guide us in the ways of truth and love. Are you willing to submit your life to the Word of God? Take a moment to reflect on the consequences of your answer to this question as we should be aware of what it means before embarking on such a course of action. Jesus’ obedience led Him to embrace suffering and death for us; we can be sure we will not be spared the same in our lives if we choose to become a disciple of Jesus.

Hebrews 4:12-13
12 Brothers and sisters: Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. 13 No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

Everyone who desires to be wealthy in this life ought to very carefully read today’s Scripture and those that relate to it. The responsibility that comes with wealth is enormous particularly when we realize that the priority of our lives is eternal life, and not the gathering of riches here on earth. This is not to say that wealth is evil, but to remind us that it can be a distraction to our true focus, as well as a source of temptation to sin.

Mark 10:17-30
17 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.’ ” 20 He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22 At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to pass through [the] eye of [a] needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “We have given up everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel 30 who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.”

Paul summarizes here all that God has done in the face of human sin. The basic truth is that God has dealt with sin in a definitive manner through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The question that still remains is whether or not we will accept His offer of salvation and live it through faith. What is Paul’s understanding of faith? The next chapter will reveal this to us.

Romans 3:21-30
21 Brothers and sisters: Now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; 23 all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. 24 They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed, 26 through the forbearance of God — to prove his righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 What occasion is there then for boasting? It is ruled out. On what principle, that of works? No, rather on the principle of faith. 28 For we consider that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Does God belong to Jews alone? Does he not belong to Gentiles, too? Yes, also to Gentiles, 30 for God is one and will justify the circumcised on the basis of faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

P S A L M

Psalm 130:1b-2. 3-4. 5-6ab
R: With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; Lord, hear my voice! 2 Let your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication. (R) 3 If you, O LORD, mark iniquities, LORD, who can stand? 4 But with you is forgiveness, that you may be revered. (R) 5 I trust in the LORD; my soul trusts in his word. 6 My soul waits for the LORD more than sentinels wait for the dawn. More than sentinels wait for the dawn. (R)

Some of the commentators say that of the two great Carmelite women Doctors of the Church, Teresa of Avila wrote and lived the mystical theology and Therese of Lisieux showed us  how to live it in the ordinary events of our lives! This is probably a fair reflection of the truth but it is important for us to try to draw some of the insights Teresa of Avila presents us in her writings. It is probably easier to read her in a moremodern translation such as Carolyn Humphries, From Ashes to Fire — but at least let us try to learn from her insights and wisdom.

Luke 11:47-54
47 The Lord said: “Woe to you! You build the memorials of the prophets whom your ancestors killed. 48 Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building. 49 Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’ 50 in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood! 52 Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.” 53 When he left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, 54 for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

Readings for Today (October 16, 2009)

1st READING

Abraham’s faith becomes the model for Christian faith. The faith of Abraham is really a total abandonment of self to the mercy and love of God. Abraham leaves his wealth (although he takes a fair bit with him) and his country to set out into the unknown at the bidding of God. To an outsider, this must have seemed like sheer madness! This is what our faith probably looks like to those who do not believe. Let us pray for the grace to abandon all to Jesus and follow Him as His disciple.

Romans 4:1-8
1 Brothers and sisters: What then can we say that Abraham found, our ancestor according to the flesh? 2 Indeed, if Abraham was justified on the basis of his works, he has reason to boast; but this was not so in the sight of God. 3 For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 4 A worker’s wage is credited not as a gift, but as something due. 5 But when one does not work, yet believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness. 6 So also David declares the blessedness of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not record.”

P S A L M

Psalm 32:1b-2. 5. 11
R: I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
1 Blessed is he whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt, in whose spirit there is no guile. (R) 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, my guilt I covered not. I said, “I confess my faults to the LORD,” and you took away the guilt of my sin. (R) 11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just; exult, all you upright of heart. (R)

Today’s Feast of Margaret Mary Alacoque celebrates her role in the propagation of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She is one of many saints who champion this devotion, including St. John Eudes, a devotion that centers on celebrating the merciful love of God as revealed in the heart of Jesus His Son, broken open for us in love on the cross. Just the truth of this last sentence gives us much food for meditation. Let us seek to deepen our understanding and experience of God’s mercy and love.

Luke 12:1-7
1 At that time: So many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. He began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware  of the leaven — that is, the hypocrisy — of the Pharisees. 2 “There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. 4 I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. 5 I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. 7 Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.”

We see the depth of the faith of Jesus in His Father in that He willingly allowed Himself to undergo suffering and death, trusting, knowing through faith that His Father would vindicate Him. This is the depth of faith to which the Holy Spirit calls us all. We are called to nothing less than a 100 percent surrender to God’s will. The truth is, surrender to God’s will is the surest path to happiness and fulfillment. The world may offer alternatives for this but they will always come up short and empty.

Romans 4:20-25
20 Brothers and sisters: Abraham did not doubt God’s promise in unbelief; rather, he was empowered by faith and gave glory to God 21 and was fully convinced that what he had promised he was also able to do. 22 That is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23 But it was not for him alone that it was written that “it was credited to him”; 24 it was also for us, to whom it will be credited, who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was handed over for our transgressions and was raised for our justification.

P S A L M

Luke 1:68-69. 70-72. 73-75
R: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people.
68 He has come to his people and set them free. 69 He has raised up for us a mighty savior, born of the house of his servant David. (R) 70 Through his holy prophets he promised of old 71 that he would save us from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. 72 He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. (R) 73 This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: 74 to set us free f rom the hand of enemies, free to worship him without fear 75 holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. (R)

And so we are called to reflect once again on the responsibility of riches. Let us acknowledge that focusing on them is not going to do us any good at all as they do not accompany us to heaven. Riches are given to us for a purpose — to benefit the work of the Kingdom of God. If our riches are not being employed in that way then it would be better for us to get rid of them as they are only a distraction.

Luke 12:13-21
13 Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” 14 He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” 15 Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of  possessions.” 16 Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. 17 He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ 18 And he said, “This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods 19 and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ 21 Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”

That truly is a powerful statement. Very powerful. We should not store up riches for when we die, where shall the riches go to? Be rich spiritually, be rich in FAITH. Be rich in GOOD WORKS. Be rich in the WORD OF GOD.

For these things, are the basis of life eternal. Integral to the path of salvation in Jesus Christ LORD.

What benefit does it for a brother if he stores treasures in Earth while he does not store treasures that is in Heaven? This treasure--is Life Eternal. Salvation of The soul that is guaranteed in JESUS CHRIST LORD. And in Christ ALONE.

Readings for Today - October 20, 2009

1st READING

When we read Romans 5, we discover the texts that have given rise to our understanding of Original Sin. Whether Paul meant them to be understood this way is a debatable issue. I want to suggest that even if he did have this understanding it was not his focus. The focus here is to present Jesus and the victory He wins over sin and death as far greater and more powerful than anything sin has done or can do. For Paul, the crucial point is that whatever evil sin has accomplished, Jesus has accomplished even more through His obedience to the Father’s will.

Romans 5:12. 15b. 17-19. 20b-21
12 Brothers and sisters: Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all, inasmuch as all sinned. 15 If by that one person’s transgression the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one person Jesus Christ overflow for the many. 17 For if, by the transgression of one person, death came to reign through that one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of justification come to reign in life through the one person Jesus Christ. 18 In conclusion, just as through one transgression condemnation came upon all, so through one righteous act acquittal and life came to all. 19 For just as through the disobedience of one person the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of one the many will be made righteous. 20 Where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through justification for eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

P S A L M

Psalm 40:7-8a. 8b-9. 10. 17
R: Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.
6 [7] Sacrifice or oblation you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me. Burnt offerings or sin-offerings you sought not; 7 [8] then said I, “Behold I come.” (R) In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, 8 [9] to do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!” (R) 9 [10] I announced your justice in the vast assembly; I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know. (R) 16 [17] May all who seek you exult and be glad in you, and may those who love your salvation say ever, “The LORD be glorified.” (R)

G O S P E L

When will Jesus come again? Nobody knows, only the Father. What should be our response to this reality? The answer is simple: be prepared for His return at all times. We should never assume that there will be another tomorrow. Jesus will come like a thief in the night. The Gospel call is quite clear, namely that we should seek to grow in holiness and service of the Gospel in order to prepare us for that day when we stand before God and give an account of our lives.

Luke 12:35-38
35 Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps 36 and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. 38 And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants.”

The reign of sin has ended and we have been set free from its powers. Why then do we continue to sin? Simply because that is what we choose to do. This is the ugly truth. Jesus has put the powers of sin to death and offers us the victory through faith. If we do not experience victory over sin the only person we can blame is ourselves for it is we who, by choosing to give in to temptation, choose also to reject the victory Christ offers us all.

Romans 6:12-18
12 Brothers and sisters: Sin must not reign over your mortal bodies so that you obey their desires. 13 And do not present the parts of your bodies to sin as weapons for wickedness, but present yourselves to God as raised from the dead to life and the parts of your bodies to God as weapons for righteousness. 14 For sin is not to have any power over you, since you are not under the law but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Of course not! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that, although you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18 Freed from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness.

P S A L M

Psalm 124:1b-3. 4-6. 7-8
R: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
1 Had not the LORD been with us, let Israel say, 2 had not the LORD been with us — when men rose up against us, 3 then would they have swallowed us alive. When their fury was inflamed against us. (R) 4 Then would the waters have overwhelmed us; the torrent would have swept over us; 5 over us then would have swept the raging waters. 6 Blessed be the LORD, who did not leave us a prey to their teeth. (R) 7 We were rescued like a bird from the fowlers’ snare; broken was the snare, and we were freed. 8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. (R)

G O S P E L

These parables serve to remind us to live ordered lives. Socrates tells us that we should regularly reflect upon our lives in order to give them meaning. Jesus reminds us of the same truth when He tells us to be prepared for anything. We never know where our faith is going to take us. Next year, next month, next week you might be called to leave your home and family to become a missionary. This is probably unlikely, but you never know where the Spirit will lead us…

Luke 12:39-48
39 Jesus said to his disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” 41 Then Peter said, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?” 42 And the Lord replied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute [the] food allowance at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. 44 Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 then that servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful. 47 That servant who knew his master’s will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; 48 and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

Paul reminds us again that the choice is ours. We must choose to place our lives and bodies in the service of righteousness. This requires persistence on our part for, even though the devil has been defeated by Jesus, he has not given up and he still hopes to lure people away from a life of righteousness into a life of sin and despair. Judging from the state of the world, he is not totally unsuccessful. Let us pray that we would not become part of his army but that we would choose to be soldiers for Christ.

Romans 6:19-23
19 Brothers and sisters: I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your nature. For just as you presented the parts of your bodies as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness for lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. 20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. 21 But what profit did you get then from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been freed from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to sanctification, and its end is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

P S A L M

[Psalm 1:1-2. 3. 4 and 6
R: Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

Jesus knows that He has been given a task by His Father in Heaven, namely to save humanity from sin. It is this longing to complete His assigned task out of loving obedience to His Father that is the source of Jesus’ cry in today’s Gospel. We should all have a similar cry in the depths of our hearts — crying out to God for our and all humanity’s salvation — and seeking to do all we can to contribute to the reaching of this goal.

Luke 12:49-53
49 Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! 50 There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; 53 a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

The struggle Paul speaks of here is the struggle of the good person who is finding it impossible to do the right thing. The truth of the matter for Christians is that this should not be our struggle as we ought to be living in the victory of Christ on a daily basis. Paul expresses this in exclaiming at the end that it is in Jesus Christ that his wretchedness is redeemed. This is true for us as well, if we are willing to surrender our lives to Christ through faith.

Romans 7:18-25a
18 Brothers and sisters: I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh. The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21 So, then, I discover the principle that when I want to do right, evil is at hand. 22 For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self, 23 but I see in my members another principle at war with the law of my mind, taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Miserable one that I am! Who will deliver me from this mortal body? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

P S A L M

Psalm 119:66. 68. 76. 77. 93. 94
R: Lord, teach me your statutes.
66 Teach me wisdom and knowledge, for in your commands I trust. (R) 68 You are good and bountiful; teach me your statutes. (R) 76 Let your kindness comfort me according to your promise to your servants. (R) 77 Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your law is my delight. (R) 93 Never will I forget your precepts, for through them you give me life. (R) 94 I am yours; save me, for I have sought your precepts. (R)

G O S P E L

If we have a gift we should use it. If we have gained wisdom in the eyes of the world or the eyes of God, we should use it. We should employ all the gifts and resources we have in building God’s Kingdom at every opportunity. Let us always look out for opportunities that we can give witness to God and His love to others so that they might be called into the same experience of God’s love that we have been so blessed to have received.

Luke 12:54-59
54 Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain — and so it does; 55 and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot — and so it is. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? 57 “Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58 If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. 59 I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

Jesus’ victory is so complete that it extends to us. Paul clearly tells us that the days of the reign of sin as experienced in a form of evil compulsion are gone. Alleluia to that! We can now live as we ought to as children of God moving along the path that will lead to eternal life. There is nothing that can stop us from doing this anymore if we are willing to reject the temptations that sin will keep trying to place before us.

Romans 8:12-17
12 Brothers and sisters: We are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “ Abba, Father!” 16 The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Psalm 68:2 and 4. 6-7ab. 20-21
R: Our God is the God of salvation.
1 [2] God arises; his enemies are scattered, and those who hate him flee before him. 3 [4] But the just rejoice and exult before God; they are glad and rejoice. (R) 5 [6] The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. 6 [7] God gives a home to the forsaken; he leads forth prisoners to prosperity. (R) 19 [20] Blessed day by day be the Lord, who bears our burdens; God, who is our salvation. 20 [21] God is a saving God for us; the LORD, my Lord, controls  the passageways of death. (R)

To be upset about the healing of someone with such a terrible ailment indicates a fairly sick sort of mind and heart, I think. The only truly loving response is one of joy and gratitude at the gift of healing. Let us never be jealous of the blessings God bestows on others but learn to rejoice in them, as God’s blessings are always given for the benefit of all and not just for an individual.

Luke 13:10-17
10 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath. 11 And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, “Woman, you are set free of your infirmity.” 13 He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath, said to the crowd in reply, “There are six days when work should be done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day.” 15 The Lord said to him in reply, Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering? 16 This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day from this bondage?” 17 When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.

Debt in the financial sense of the word is something that we should try to avoid if at all possible. There is no such thing as good debt. Sometimes it may be unavoidable but it is far better for us to try and live with the things we have and the things we can afford than to burden ourselves with ever-growing debt responsibilities. There are aspects of the economy of a nation and the world over which we as individuals have little control of. Let us try to avoid placing ourselves at the mercy of such forces.

Romans 13:8-10
8 Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, namely “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

P S A L M

Psalm 112:1b-2. 4-5. 9
R: Blessed the man who is gracious and lends to those in need.
1 Blessed the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commands. 2 His posterity shall be mighty upon the earth; the upright generation shall be blessed. (R) 4 He dawns through the darkness, a light for the upright; he is gracious and merciful and just. 5 Well for the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice. (R) 9 Lavishly he gives to the poor; his generosity shall endure forever; his horn shall be exalted in glory. (R)

G O S P E L

When it comes to the bottom line, God asks us to give up everything for Him. Jesus clearly tells us in the Gospel that we must be prepared to do this or we cannot hope to be His disciple. Lucky for us that God does not abandon us if are unwilling to give up all for Him. He works with us until the time that we are willing to give all. This is when we become saints. If it takes death to forcibly remove the ‘things’ from our lives that stop us from following God fully, then so be it. However, the sooner we can let go of the world, the sooner we will find our lives under the full blessing of God.

Luke 14:25-33
25 Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them, 26 “If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? 29 Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him 30 and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’ 31 Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? 32 But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms. 33 In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.”

AMEN!

I shall not fear for my heart trusts in THE LORD.

I shall not fear for my faith is in the LORD

The LORD is my light and my salvation!
Whom shall I fear?

The LORD is my rock and my foundation, in HIS HANDS, I am protected and sheltered,
whom shall I be afraid?

The LORD provides for me day and night!
Whom shall I have to fear?

The LORD is the basket of my refreshment
The LORD is the protector, the ground in whom I stand.
The LORD is my staff in whom I lean on in times of trouble.
Ye, I may have troubles but the LORD shall deliver me.
For He is my LORD and my GOD.

In whom ALL GOOD THINGS come.

May the LORD grant me victory through all obstacles.
For I am encouraged and JUSTIFIED IN FAITH and SAVED in JESUS CHRIST WHO IS MY LORD AND SAVIOR.

I declare VICTORY!
Victory in Jesus Christ!
Victory in Jesus!
I stamp my foot on my enemies and the devil!
For I have VICTORY in Jesus Christ who is LORD!

REPENT AND BE SAVED!

Reading 1
1 Sm 1:24-28

In those days,
Hannah brought Samuel with her,
along with a three-year-old bull,
an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine,
and presented him at the temple of the LORD in Shiloh.
After the boy’s father had sacrificed the young bull,
Hannah, his mother, approached Eli and said:
“Pardon, my lord!
As you live, my lord,
I am the woman who stood near you here, praying to the LORD.
I prayed for this child, and the LORD granted my request.
Now I, in turn, give him to the LORD;
as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD.” She left Samuel there.

Responsorial Psalm
1 Samuel 2:1, 4-5, 6-7, 8abcd

R.        (see 1a)  My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“My heart exults in the LORD,
my horn is exalted in my God.
I have swallowed up my enemies;
I rejoice in my victory.”
R.        My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“The bows of the mighty are broken,
while the tottering gird on strength.
The well-fed hire themselves out for bread,
while the hungry batten on spoil.
The barren wife bears seven sons,
while the mother of many languishes.”
R.        My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“The LORD puts to death and gives life;
he casts down to the nether world;
he raises up again.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich,
he humbles, he also exalts.”
R.        My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“He raises the needy from the dust;
from the dung heap he lifts up the poor,
To seat them with nobles
and make a glorious throne their heritage.”
R.        My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.

Gospel
Lk 1:46-56

Mary said:

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
for he has looked upon his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.”

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months

and then returned to her home.

Reading 1
Mal 3:1-4, 23-24

Thus says the Lord GOD:
Lo, I am sending my messenger
to prepare the way before me;
And suddenly there will come to the temple
the LORD whom you seek,
And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.
Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
But who will endure the day of his coming?
And who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
or like the fuller’s lye.
He will sit refining and purifying silver,
and he will purify the sons of Levi,
Refining them like gold or like silver
that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD.
Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem
will please the LORD,
as in the days of old, as in years gone by.

Lo, I will send you
Elijah, the prophet,
Before the day of the LORD comes,
the great and terrible day,
To turn the hearts of the fathers to their children,
and the hearts of the children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike

the land with doom.

Responsorial Psalm
25:4-5ab, 8-9, 10 and 14

R.        (see Luke 21:28)  Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.
Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;
teach me your paths,
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my savior.
R.        Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.
Good and upright is the LORD;
thus he shows sinners the way.
He guides the humble to justice,
he teaches the humble his way.
R.        Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.
All the paths of the LORD are kindness and constancy
toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him,
and his covenant, for their instruction.
R.        Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.

Gospel
Lk 1:57-66

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child
she gave birth to a son.
Her neighbors and relatives heard
that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,
and they rejoiced with her.
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child,
they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
but his mother said in reply,
“No. He will be called John.”
But they answered her,
“There is no one among your relatives who has this name.”
So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,”
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their neighbors,
and all these matters were discussed
throughout the hill country of Judea.
All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
“What, then, will this child be?

For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.”
