DO YOU KNOW HOW THE APOSTLES DIED?
« on: August 18, 2009, 04:30:24 PM »

DO YOU KNOW HOW THE APOSTLES DIED?

Matthew - Suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia , killed by a sword wound.

Mark - Died in Alexandria, Egypt, after being dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead.

Luke  - was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the lost.

John - Faced martyrdom when he was boiled in huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution in Rome .. however, he was miraculously delivered from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos . He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos . The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey . He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully.

Peter - was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross.  According to church tradition it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die in the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

James   - Just The leader of the church in Jerusalem , was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club. * This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation.

James the Great  - son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus called him to a life time of ministry. As a strong leader of the church, James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem . The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial.. Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.

Bartholomew  - also known as Nathaniel was a missionary to Asia .  He witnessed for our Lord in present day Turkey .. Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip.

Andrew  - was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras , Greece .  After being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony. His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words:  'I have long desired and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it.'   He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired.

Thomas  - Was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the sub-continent.

Jude  - Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ.

Matthias  - The apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot was stoned and then beheaded.

Barnabas  - One of the group of seventy disciples, wrote the Epistle of Barnabas. He preached throughout Italy and Cyprus . Barnabas was stoned to death at Salonica.

Paul  -  Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67. Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed through out the Roman Empire . These letters, which taught many of the foundational doctrines of Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament.

Perhaps this is a reminder to us that our sufferings here are indeed minor compared to the intense persecution and cold cruelty faced by the apostles/disciples during their times for the sake of their Faith.

You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved. Matthew 10:22

Beautiful message, Buwad.

My eyes bled tears in reading about the life and death of Simon Peter "Cephas" (The Rock).

When he was about to be crucified, he requested he be crucified upside down, as The Blessed Peter voiced out, "I am not worth to die in the same manner as THE LORD. Let me be crucified upside down."

And so the Romans crucified him according to his request.

Peter suffered a longer death...

God Bless Saint Peter.

St. Andrew empowers us!

The man preached for 2 days while on the cross!

The Holy Spirit is indeed a powerful Consolation!

Even UNTO DEATH! We must GLORIFY our GOD!

To spread His message.

Very inspiring.

I am so blessed reading this. Thanks Buwadsanga. I only know how Peter and Paul died but had no idea how the rest of Christ's disciples died.

I will read this over and over again so that I'd be able to remember so well how the pioneers of Christian faith died for Jesus.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. - John 3:16-18

They died as martyrs so willingly because theirs was the reward in Heaven.

We, are bound to that relationship. The Communion of Saints.

We are called to be doers and hearers of the WORD.

You, and I, and all others who have accepted Christ into our Lives are Saints.

We are GOD'S ELECT.

--
Beloved, are you God’s elect? To the elect God multiples grace and peace (I Pet. 1:2)

--

The Apostolic Saints are ROLE MODELS.

Of how Christians should live, behave, and die.

Faith and Works.

This is very informative, as it is edifying.

Thanks for sharing, Buwad.

I thought I'd also add the trivia that in many instances the first apostles/disciples subsequently also became the first bishop of the place.

It's amazing to read a part of the sufferings of our apostles just to defend their faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

I can't imagine how Apostle John survived being boiled in a big basin of boiling water.  Pagkasakit!

As a person of Boholano ancestry, most of us believe in God. Now we knew how the apostles died. Lots of question came to my mind, How am I leading my life? Do I have the true Christian belief and practices? Am I on the right religion? (See how Jesus and some apostles died, they are judge by Roman authorities or Barbaric crowds.) Which group I belong today? (Jesus and Apostles, Roman Authorities and Barbaric crowds.) Do I have the true Christian values today? (Similar to what Jesus and the apostles teached during their days.)

This is an intriguing topic with a big consequence in our life. Thanks.

Philip = According to Hippolytus, Philip preached and was executed in what today is eastern Turkey:
Philip preached in Phrygia, and was crucified in Hierapolis with his head downward in the
time of Domitian, and was buried there.

Simon the Zealot = he was put to death by a saw in Lincolnshire.

Sources on what happened to Jesus' disciples

Hippolytus of Rome:
Birth unknown, died around 236 AD

Eusebius:
Was the Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine, known as the "Father of Church History" because he wrote about the church history. Lived around 260-341 AD

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
....And now... what ever happened to the disciples of Jesus....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Judas Iscariot
We all know what happened to him...

Andrew
According to Hippolytus:
Andrew preached to the Scythians [modern day Georgia] and Thracians [modern day Bulgaria], and was crucified, suspended on an olive tree, at Patrae, a town of Achaia [Greece]; and there too he was buried.

Bartholomew
According to Hippolytus, Bartholomew preached in India:
Bartholomew, again, preached to the Indians, to whom he also gave the Gospel according to Matthew, and was crucified with his head downward, and was buried in Allanum, a town of the great Armenia [modern day southern Georgia].

Eusebius, in his Church History, confirms the ministry of Bartholomew in India, and adds an eye witness account:
About that time, Pantaenus, a man highly distinguished for his learning, had charge of the school of the faithful in Alexandria... Pantaenus...is said to have gone to India. It is reported that among persons there who knew of Christ, he found the Gospel according to Matthew, which had anticipated his own arrival. For Bartholomew, one of the apostles, had preached to them, and left with them the writing of Matthew in the Hebrew language, which they had preserved till that time. ---- (Book 5, Chapter 10)

James, Son of Alphaeus
Hippolytus identifies that James was stoned to death in Jerusalem:
And James the son of Alphaeus, when preaching in Jerusalem, was stoned to death by the Jews, and was buried there beside the temple.

James, Son of Zebedee
James was the brother of John, the disciple "that Jesus loved".

According to the Book of Acts in the New Testament, James was killed by Herod:
Act 12:1 And at that time Herod the king threw on his hands to oppress some of those of the church.
Act 12:2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

This is confirmed by Hippolytus:
James, his brother, when preaching in Judea, was cut off with the sword by Herod the tetrarch, and was buried there.

Eusebius descibed more precisely what was cut off of James:
First Stephen was stoned to death by them, and after him James, the son of Zebedee and the brother of John, was beheaded... (Book 3, Chapter 5)
Yep... James' head was cut...

John, brother of James and son of Zebedee
John was one of the few disciples that did not die a cruel death, but of "old age".

Eusebius discusses the reason that John wrote his Gospel:
"Matthew and John have left us written memorials, and they, tradition says, were led to write only under the pressure of necessity...And when Mark and Luke had already published their Gospels, they say that John, who had employed all his time in proclaiming the Gospel orally, finally proceeded to write for the following reason. The three Gospels already mentioned having come into the hands of all and into his own too, they say that he accepted them and bore witness to their truthfulness; but that there was lacking in them an account of the deeds done by Christ at the beginning of his ministry." (Book 3, Chapter 24)

According to Hippolytus, John was banished by Domitian to the Isle of Patmos, and later died in Ephesus:
John, again, in Asia, was banished by Domitian the king to the isle of Patmos, in which also he wrote his Gospel and saw the apocalyptic vision; and in Trajan's time he fell asleep at Ephesus, where his remains were sought for, but could not be found.

Matthew/Levi
Eusebius referenced to Bishop Papias of Hierapolis, as early as c. 110 A.D., bearing witness to Matthew's authorship of his gospel:
....Matthew put together the oracles [of the Lord] in the Hebrew language, and each one interpreted them as best he could." (Eusebius, Book 3, Chapter 39)

According to Hippolytus:
Matthew wrote the Gospel in the Hebrew tongue, and published it at Jerusalem, and fell asleep at Hierees, a town of Parthia.\224 [Parthia is near modern day Tehran]

Simon/Peter
Eusebius, quoting Papias of Hierapolis (c. 110 A.D.), records a tradition that the Gospel of Mark preserved the Gospel as preached by Peter:

"Mark having become the interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately whatsoever he remembered.... he accompanied Peter..." ---- (Book 3, Chapter 39)

Irenaeus (c. 180 A.D.) records a similar tradition, and mentions that Peter and Paul founded the Church in Rome:
"Matthew also issued a written Gospel among the Hebrews in their own dialect, while Peter and Paul were preaching at Rome, and laying the foundations of the Church. After their departure, Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, did also hand down to us in writing what had been preached by Peter..." ---- (Irenaeus, "Against Heresies", Book 3, Chapter 1)

Eusebius records that Peter was put to death under Nero in Rome:
It is, therefore, recorded that Paul was beheaded in Rome itself, and that Peter likewise was crucified under Nero. This account of Peter and Paul is substantiated by the fact that their names are preserved in the cemeteries of that place even to the present day. ---- (Book 2, Chapter 25)
(Paul was a Roman citizen can cannot be crucified but got an "easier" death sentence)

Hippolytus confirmed the fact that Peter was crucified by Nero in Rome:
Peter preached the Gospel in Pontus, and Galatia, and Cappadocia, and Betania, and Italy, and Asia, and was afterwards crucified by Nero in Rome with his head downward, as he had himself desired to suffer in that manner.

Philip
According to Hippolytus, Philip preached and was executed in what today is eastern Turkey:
Philip preached in Phrygia, and was crucified in Hierapolis with his head downward in the time of Domitian, and was buried there.

Simon the Zealot
According to Hippolytus, Simon the Zealot was the second Bishop of Jerusalem:

Simon the Zealot, the son of Clopas, who is also called Jude, became bishop of Jerusalem after James the Just, and fell asleep and was buried there at the age of 120 years.

Thaddaeus/Judas son of James
According to Mat 10:3 (KJV): Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus.... Thaddaeus is also known as Lebbaeus.

Hippolytus records:
Jude, who is also called Lebbaeus, preached to the people of Edessa, and to all Mesopotamia, and fell asleep at Berytus, and was buried there.

Thomas
Hippolytus records that Thomas was an active missionary, and that he met his fate in India:
And Thomas preached to the Parthians, Medes, Persians, Hyrcanians, Bactrians, and Margians, and was thrust through in the four members of his body with a pine spear at Calamene, the city of India, and was buried there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After thought

Many of Jesus disciples died cruel deaths for preaching the gospel

From other sources (e.g., Paul's letters, Pliny's letters to Trajan ( click here ), etc), all these Christians need to do to escape a cruel execution was simply: to denounce their faith in Jesus...

Meanwhile, in the case of those who were denounced to me as Christians, I have observed the following procedure: I interrogated these as to whether they were Christians; those who confessed I interrogated a second and a third time, threatening them with punishment; those who persisted I ordered executed. For I had no doubt that, whatever the nature of their creed, stubbornness and inflexible obstinacy surely deserve to be punished. There were others possessed of the same folly; but because they were Roman citizens, I signed an order for them to be transferred to Rome. (A letter from Pliny to Trajan)

Yet, they decided not to denounce Jesus... Why ???...

People do not die for a lie - these disciples must have seen something that made them choose their cruel death over denouncing their faith.

Remember that these disciples are Jews - and the ultimate promise of God to the Jews was the coming of a Messiah....

Maybe, just maybe, they were convinced of having seen and touched the Messiah ? The ressurection of the death may have given them the necessary push that made them overcome their doubt ?

Human nature is such that no sane man would give up his own life to a belief that he knows is untrue.

If anyone knew for sure whether Jesus did or did not resurrect from His death, it would be His disciples.
In fact, Christianity was NOT spread by Jesus, but by these disciples... They willingly went out to tell about Jesus' resurrection while putting their life on the line.

The historical FACT that many of these disciples decided to give up their own life to tell the world about that "Jesus has resurrected" is a very STRONG evidence that what they died for is the truth !

The reason that many of these disciples were executed is this:

They refuse to renounce their Lord Jesus, the Christ... That is the truth they are willing to die for...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two more testimonies

There are 2 people who offer an even stronger testimony to Jesus' resurrection:

Jesus' (half) brother James Paul

Both of these persons were anti-Jesus before their conversion; and yet later in their lives, both of them were willing to give their life to Jesus whom they willingly called "Lord"...

The Bible tells us that James did not believe in Him:

John 7:5 For His brothers did not believe in Him.
It should not be surprising that Jesus' own brothers would not believe - imagine growing up with Jesus and one day, your brother claims to be the Son of God... Tough sell...

The Jewish Historian Josephus told us that James was martyred in Jerusalem:

In Antiquities, Book 20, Chapter 9:
Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the sanhedrim of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others, [or, some of his companions]; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned...

(Note that Josephus was not a Christian and his work was mainly to write about Jewish history - his mentioning of Jesus and James affirms the historicity of Jesus and James as actual persons in history)

This may be the reason why James was willing to die for Jesus:

1Co 15:1 And, brothers, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you have received, and in which you stand;
1Co 15:2 by which you also are being kept safe, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
1Co 15:3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures,
1Co 15:4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures;
1Co 15:5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the Twelve.
1Co 15:6 Afterward He was seen by over five hundred brothers at once, of whom the greater part remain until this present day, but also some fell asleep.
1Co 15:7 Afterward He was seen by James....
Yep, if you see someone back alive after seeing Him die and be buried, the event can really change your mind about Him...

Paul himself confessed that he was persecuting Christians before his conversion.
According to his own words, Jesus appeared to Him on the way to Damascus (to round up Christians - see Acts, Chapter 9) and his life is no longer the same.

His belief in Jesus was backed by his martyrdom in Rome (he was decapitated) - that's quite a turn around: from someone who could not care less about Christians to someone who would give up his own life for the belief....

The only explanation is that Paul did see Jesus on that road to Damascus...

That is why I recoil every time I hear preachers who define being in God's favor as living in material comfort, driving the latest car, being free of illness and physical troubles, etc.

Jesus himself not only did away with material comfort, but died in the worst possible manner.  And in this thread, we learn that most of the disciples and apostles died in ways not too different from the cross.

1 Peter 2:19-21 says, "For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps."

In our little own way as followers of Jesus Christ we should be worthy enough to defend our faith. If they have offered their lives to our Lord Savior Jesus Christ why not kita dili? It reminded me that as a christian I should be involved to the teaching of Jesus Christ which Jesus Has taught a thousand years ago. For the coming generations the teachings will always remain to be the living flesh of Christ's blood and body. I love you Jesus and let the change start in me.

It's amazing to read a part of the sufferings of our apostles just to defend their faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

I can't imagine how Apostle John survived being boiled in a big basin of boiling water.  Pagkasakit!

It´s not easy to follow the footsteps of Christ nor become to be his followers:

Then He said to them all(his disciples): If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.  What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self.  Luke 9:23-25

Following Christ may not be easy and to certain extend it maybe costly, but in long run it well worth the pain and effort.  Nothing materials can compensate for the loss of eternal life.  Worldly reward of weath, comfort, fame and pleasure is short term gain and it will be perished, but eternal life is forever.     :)

Ako pud nakurat sa akong nahibal-an kon gi unsa pag buhis ang  kaugalingon sa mga apostoles o kinabuhi para sa gugma ni Jesus ug para sa atong kaluwasan.

God is Love and is really good.

Wa man untay gutom becauses were leaving in an abundant universe.

Very well said, Buwad.

Its true, better to suffer for Christ than to live for yourself and in emptiness.

As a friend of mine once told me,
" The Peace of Jesus Christ is far more powerful than anything in this world; and Only Through Him are we given True Peace, In Him we are saved. "

Ang deep message: All the world is changing, it changes like the dusts of time. But the one thing that we can count on is the Love of Jesus Christ.

Which will never change.

In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, "Please come at once!" Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive. This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord."

Blessed Peter the Apostle (CEPHAS; THE ROCK)

In our study of the book of Acts we have seen the birth and growth of the church as chronicled by Luke the physician. In the first eight chapters we read about the ministry and witness of the apostles, especially that of the chief apostle, Peter. In Acts 9 we learned about Saul of Tarsus, the great enemy of Jesus Christ, who went about breathing out slaughter and threatenings as he sought to destroy the church of Jesus Christ. As he traveled to Damascus to arrest Christians there, Saul was conquered and subdued by the mighty Lord Jesus Christ, the King of kings and the Lord of lords. As a result of Saul’s conversion, "the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace," as we read in Acts 9:31.

In Acts 9:32 Luke picks up the activity of Peter again. When we last saw him in Acts 8:25, Peter, along with John, was returning to Jerusalem, having preached the gospel in many Samaritan villages. Acts 9:32 says that Peter was moving west to the partially Gentile territory of the Mediterranean coast of Palestine, specifically to the cities of Lydda and Joppa. Known as Philistine country in earlier times, it was in this area that Samson, empowered by the Holy Spirit, picked up the doors of the city gates of Gaza, lifted them to his shoulders, and carried them up to a hill, thus demonstrating to the Philistines the power of the Spirit of the living God.

Peter was now coming to the same region to demonstrate the power of the gospel to save sinners. Despite the previous times of persecution by Saul and the Jews, the gospel was making steady progress as it spread from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, Galilee and beyond. As Jesus Christ said, the gates of hell shall not prevail against the church that he is building. They cannot, because, as Paul says in Romans 1, the gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Gentile. Our adversary Satan is powerless to resist the conquering Christ and the progress of his gospel.

Philip the Evangelist had visited this region before, as we read in Acts 8:40. Now Peter was coming as an apostle, not only to oversee the church and instruct it in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, but also to evangelize further. In this study, therefore, we will first examine the apostle Simon Peter; second, Peter’s ministry in Lydda; and, third, Peter’s ministry in Joppa.

The Miraculous Resurrection of Dorcas

The door was closed, there was a dead body, and Peter was alone on his knees. But he was not really alone. Peter saw God Almighty and prayed to him. And the Spirit of God gave him the confidence that it was God’s will to raise this young woman from the dead. So Peter turned, looked at the dead body and spoke to it: "Tabitha, cumi!" or "Tabitha, arise!" We are told that when Peter spoke, Tabitha opened her eyes, saw Peter and sat up. Peter gave her his hand, lifted her up, and she stood.

Oh, what a mighty God we serve! When Tabitha had died, her spirit had gone straight into the presence of God. But when Peter prayed and commanded her to get up, Tabitha’s spirit was sent back from heaven. It instantly entered her body and she was alive again.

When Christians die, their spirits go to God. When Stephen was being stoned he said, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Jesus Christ himself committed his spirit to God the Father before he died on the cross. To the thief who repented on the cross Jesus said, "Today you will be with me in paradise," and in Luke 16 we read that when the poor man Lazarus died, his spirit went to Abraham’s bosom, which was the presence of God.

But in this instance Peter prayed, and God said to Tabitha’s spirit, "I want you to go back into your body." The spirit obeyed, and Tabitha was made alive again.

Who Was Simon Peter?

When we first read about Peter in the gospel accounts, we notice right away that he was not a strong character. He seemed to be a weak, wishy-washy person by nature. But God has a plan to change his people, so when Peter was brought to the Lord Jesus Christ by his brother Andrew, Jesus told him, "’You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas’ (which, when translated, is Peter)," meaning he would become a rock--strong and mighty--through the work of Jesus Christ in his life (John 1:42).

We also know that Peter was a sinner, as he himself acknowledged. When he realized Jesus’ role in causing a miraculous number of fish to be caught, Peter told Jesus, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" Confronted by the glorious manifestation of the power of Jesus Christ, Peter was filled with a profound consciousness of his own sinfulness and of Jesus’ divinity. In essence, he was telling Jesus, "Lord, I am too unholy and sinful to be in your presence. Depart from me! I am just nothing." But Jesus didn’t leave Peter, because God had ordained that Peter would become a fisher of men, one who would lead many souls to Christ.

Peter also had the distinction of being the only apostle--indeed, the only human being, other than the Lord Jesus Christ--to ever walk on water, as we read in Matthew 14:25-31. And Peter was the apostle who made the good confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, when Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" in Caesarea Philippi. And in Matthew 16:18 Jesus told Peter, " You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church," meaning the church is built upon Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God.

Peter was the only disciple we read about who rebuked Jesus for saying he would be crucified, and who received a rebuke from Jesus in return. "Get behind me, Satan!" Jesus told him. It was Peter who also boldly asserted that he would never leave Jesus, even though later that same night he denied him three times. And it was Peter whom Satan wanted to sift like wheat, but we are told in the gospel of Luke that Jesus prayed for him that his faith not fail.

After he rose from the dead, Jesus singled out Peter and spoke to him when he met with the disciples by the Sea of Galilee. No doubt Peter was still remembering how he denied Jesus before his death on the cross. Jesus restored Peter, telling him his sins were forgiven, and then he recommissioned him as an apostle, saying, "Feed my sheep. . . . Feed my lambs."

Like the other apostles, Peter was baptized in the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost, and as we read in Acts 1-8, he became a bold witness about the Lord Jesus Christ, especially about his resurrection from the dead. On several occasions Peter declared to the masses and to the Sanhedrin that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the only Lord and Christ, the Prince of life, the Holy One and the Righteous One. He also fearlessly told the Sanhedrin on two occasions, "We must obey God rather than men" when they told him to stop preaching the gospel.

By the time we catch up to Peter in Acts 9:32, we find that through God’s working in his life, he was now a true rock of a man. Enabled by the might of our Lord, Peter was now ready to be beaten and maltreated, to spend and be spent, to suffer and to be killed, all for the sake of his master, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus had commissioned Peter and the other apostles to go and preach the gospel beyond Jerusalem. So in Acts 9:32 we read, "As Peter traveled about the country," meaning he left Jerusalem and began to go about, preaching the gospel. In the Greek it says, "He was traveling through all," meaning through all the territories. Eventually, Peter came to Lydda, where he visited with the church there.

I hope through this thread, some will get saved,
come to realize that we are not on this world to do
whatever pleases our flesh, do life with gusto and
   to heck with eternity.

Remember: we are all born sinners
Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned, and come
short of the glory of God"

Psalm 23:4 "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou
art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me"

As aforementioned, the life and sufferings of the apostles and
what terrible death they had succumbed and kept the faith
            on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Imagine yourself for a moment into dark valleys,
even into the valleys of death where nothing will be
seen but  dry bones, skulls and frightful skeletons
    of those who had been slain;
        those beheaded,
        those drowned
        strangled at the stake
        some burnt
        others broken on the wheel
many torn by wild beasts half devoured
some put to death in manifold cruel ways

2Corinthians 4:17- "For our light affliction, which is
but for a moment, worketh for us a
far more exceeding and eternal weight
                             of glory"

He was the only apostle and follower of Christ Jesus that walked on water.
By The Spirit of God The Father's Divine Grace, he walked on water.

Blessed Peter the Rock, to me, represents totality.
His totality in holy life
and his totality in human frailties.

Christ Jesus knew this.
Christ knew that Peter would abandon him and deny him before the cocked crowed 3 times, Christ also knew that Peter was human and plagued with the sins and the frailties that mankind was deemed and guaranteed to suffer.

But it is Peter's confidence in Christ Jesus that we see in Matthew that he confessed that Christ was the CHRIST. The Son of The Living God.
Christ remarked and said to him, "Blessed are you Simon Bar Jonah, for it was revealed to you by the Spirit of My Father. And You are Simon Peter, and upon this rock I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH. And not even the gates of Hell can overpower it." :)

Peter is the confesser,
Peter is man totally,
Peter is a holy man of the Cloth
Peter is the Vicor of Christ,
And upon his chair is the Holy See,

How powerful
How humbling.

The First Priest of the Holy Roman Catholic Church
was the First Apostle of Christ.
And the First Confessor of Christ's Divine Grace.

GOD BE BLESSED FOREVER.
Glorify Him!
