Causes and Effects of Resentment
« on: September 15, 2013, 06:53:37 PM »
“I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity” (Acts 8:23).

The word for “gall”  is understood to mean bile, or by analogy, poison. A modern definition is “An open sore ... caused by chafing. A feeling of deep and bitter anger and ill-will” (Word Web). This well describes what a personal grievance, or grudge, and it's resentment is, a wound suffered by an injustice(s) that is kept festering by one going back to it, nursing it, with it's poison affecting the whole body. To the degree that one yields to it's desire – which is vengeance, and or recompense for wounds, getting what one feels is due him for his injustices – it robs one of joy and fulfillment, colors one's perception of others and of life, repels and hurts others, and grieves and limits the Holy Spirit. The Simon of Acts 8 (above verse) could not have the power of the Holy Spirit because his heart was not right with God.

The resentful person has bitterness over injustices suffered. He has an open “case” against others and the hurt they caused and over which he has “stewed” over. Such nursing of wounds may offer a limited amount of satisfaction to man but it produces poison to his soul. He becomes oversensitive to that which touches his open wounds, and easily finds things similar to that which originally offend them, and which reinforces the original complaint, while marginalizing and not being mindful of positive things. This condition can even lead to death, that of others or the person holding a grudge.

Nong,

Permit me to add this: We cannot be angry and hostile with a brother or sister and at the same time be at PEACE with the Lord.

Our relationships with other people will suffer. For example, a marriage will not thrive if one or both spouses become angry and refuse to address the problem. One will develop a critical spirit. Bitter people often become judgmental in an effort to justify their anger. One will lack peace. Hostility makes you restless and robs you of joy. Anger leads to emotional isolation. When people get hurt, they often try to protect themselves from further hurt by pushing others away. Anger results in frustration and anxiety.

Our unrighteous anger towards our brothers and sisters affects the Lord. First, it grieves His heart. Hostility does not fit who we are as children of God. Second, it hinders His work.

Those who harbor resentment are often not willing to obey His voice. Third, the Father will not pour out His blessings on an angry person.

Anger and deep-seeted bitterness is used by the devil to make us deaf and numb to the voice of God. And God always reminds us to forgive, to forgive. As much as He forgives us.

This is why we should always pray for comfort and the Grace to forgive and accept God to help us open our hearts.

Let me remind everyone what Jesus Christ told us in regards to sinful anger and our duty to forgive:

The Word of the Lord:

And the Lord Jesus Christ said unto them: “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift…”

Matthew 5:21-24

Yes indeed. But of course, giving in to momentary outbursts of anger is totally different from nurturing soul-consuming hate and resentment.

You're right, Nong. There are some things that might get the best of us, momentary anger as you put it. In any case, it is beneficial for us all to pray for the Grace to forgive. As one who has a weakness, I can attest the power of the Holy Spirit in healing inward hurts and outward interactions with friends, family, associates. There truly is power in asking the Holy Spirit's peace and intercession. He, literally, can move mountains. As for me, that mountain was my own heart and my own internalization of things. I let it go, gi hatag ra nako tanan ni Lord.

And boy did it work wonders. That's why in regards to people we may have differences in (and its okay to have differences, event he apostles had differences amongst themselves. lol!) we should always ask the Holy Spirit to help in calming us, and giving us a spirit of forgiveness and peace.

God Bless you, Nong.

Love and Blessings be with you!!
