The Power of Forgiveness
He pardoned the people who brutally murdered his family

the booksection of Reader's Digest Philippines february Asia,
Let's just name the character Hakim (cause i forgot)

I can't find a link of the story yet, but the story goes like this. Shortcut
Hakim was 11 when the time of cambodia  war broke out. From a comfortable life with his parents and 11 siblings, they were transferred to a small village.

his father was considered an enemy by the khmer soldiers cause they saw him as a spy for the americans

they executed his family one by one first his dad, they threw his dad's body in the pit, and then it was his turn (but it was just a scratch) and he too was thrown to the pit, next he heard his 10 y.o.bro's cry then felt the loud thump of the body  some more bodies of his brothers and their neighbors,
the khmer jumped in the grave and randomly stabbed the bodies to make sure all were dead. they noticed he was still alive so one man stabbed his back, but he still lived.  when the khmer rebels were gone, he cried and shouted so hard for help.
realizing that his family needed justice he went out of the pit and sat behind the bushes, he again heard the voices of the khmer soldiers and saw his mom and two other sisters blindfolded,
he tried to shout to his mom and say i love you not caring if he died, but no voice came out, the soldiers stabbed his mom and sisters.
his heart felt so much pain and he vowed revenge.

for days he lived in the forest. not withstanding hunger he went back to the village,  not caring if he get killed. but when he arrived, villagers considered him a miracle, he was adopted until he was able to go to school, all his life he planned for his family's death, he became a police but when he get the chance to kill a khmer soldier, her realized he can't do it , So he planned to leave Cambodia and applied for America but was denied, tried canada, and  was accepted. He studied again and later, on his life, Christianity was introduced to him, he eventually became a preacher.

One day he heard about a mission to his Cambodian village, to bring back hope to the other victims of the Khmer soldiers, his name was on the top of the list as recommendation. WIth hesitance and prayers, he finally decided to go back to his country. He went back to his village. And with the act of forgivenesss full in his heart, he asked for the rebels and he indeed met 3 of them. his father's killer, and the man who stabbed him, he didn't see guilt nor a sign of sorry in their eyes even if they told him that they had no choice, it was to kill or be killed back then. He offered them a bandanna as a symbol of forgiveness, when he met the killer of his mother, the killer  but when he met his mother's killer, the man cried and asked for forgiveness, that he lived his life with guilt for what he did when he was still young. And upon hearing those words , hakim finally found peace in his heart.

Bem, that's a very powerful story and yes, so graphic.  I felt the pain of Hakim but I failed myself because I wasn't able to forgive the killers. tsk tsk tsk
