If one reads the Q'uran and literally takes the words of Muhammad, it explicitly states that a man can marry more than once, so long as that he treats them equally; if he can do this then he can do so, but if he cannot treat them all equally, then it is not permitted. Therefore, the underlying message is that marrying more than one wife will form some kind of bias, and equal treatment of all wives is impossible, therefore, should be avoided. However, literal readeres of the Q'uran do not read the message "in between the lines."
Secondly, the husband has to ask permission from the first wife to be allowed to marry the second wife, etc. If the former does not agree, then the husband cannot marry.
Cases of the Sheiks and the Caliphs taking hundreds of wives and thousands of harlems are living antithesis and hypocrisy to the words written in their Q'uran.
Those who do marry more than one in Islam do not take into consideration the sunnahs and the hadiths.

In Judaism and in Christianity, polygamy is forbidden.
