If one reads the Q'uran and literally takes the words of Muhammad, it explicitly states that a man can marry more than once, so long as that he treats them equally; if he can do this then he can do so, but if he cannot treat them all equally, then it is not permitted. Therefore, the underlying message is that marrying more than one wife will form some kind of bias, and equal treatment of all wives is impossible, therefore, should be avoided. However, literal readeres of the Q'uran do not read the message "in between the lines."

Secondly, the husband has to ask permission from the first wife to be allowed to marry the second wife, etc. If the former does not agree, then the husband cannot marry.

Cases of the Sheiks and the Caliphs taking hundreds of wives and thousands of harlems are living antithesis and hypocrisy to the words written in their Q'uran.

Those who do marry more than one in Islam do not take into consideration the sunnahs and the hadiths.
~~

In Judaism and in Christianity, polygamy is forbidden.

Naa pay lain, uban nga mga Mormons daghan ug asawa
mga teen-agers pa gyud ang pilion sa guwang nga lalaki
Para nako dili ko mouyon ani, no way...

In the mormon religion, the more wives a man has, the higher heaven that man goes to. They even condone child marriages, and forced weddings.

this may sound weird, but i am really fascinated with these polygamous groups since their beliefs are totally the opposite with what i believe in.. with regards to Muslims, marrying more than one is not new to me since i have relatives practicing this.....

In college, I took a class in Islam 1 &2 (2 semesters worth in studying the Q'uran); it was part of a religious studies minor that I had, and my professor Dr. Suleiman and I would talk about some of the interpretations of some of the Surrahs. IN regards to marrying more than one wife, the prophet Muhammad said that marrying more than one wife was possible only if all the wives were treated equal. Since it is impossible to treat all the wives equal, marrying more than one wife was antagonized.

It is important to know the historiography of the middle east to understand the implementation of this sunnah and its mentioning in the hadiths.

One, prior to the emergence of Christianity and Islam, the people in Arabia practiced polygamy, the implemention of this rule where one (the husband) has to treat each wife equally was a means to control and curve the high level of polygamy in that region. The practice of more than one wife, was usually seen in the courts of the Caliphs, the Sheiks; and in later times, the royal houses of Saud and other royal houses in the middle east. Most famous was Sultan Suleiman II the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire, who was reknowned for more than a hundred wives and over 1000 harems.

The ancient Hindus used to practice polygamy, considering one of their gods, Vishnu, had over 1,100 wives in his kingdom; the practice of polygamy was also implemented by the deva rajas (godkings) in the ancient hindu lores.

But in regards to the mormons, in the book of mormon, it is prerequisite that a man marry more than one wife; as it guarantees his status in a higher plane of heaven. Interesting, tho.

I've heard that biologically, men are not intended to be monogamous. A man's equipment is slightly bigger than his monogamous cousin the Gorilla and slightly smaller than the promiscuous Chimpanzee, relative to their size of course.

I honestly believe that we should live and let live, what works for me and my "bitter" half (LOL) is that I am the one, the only and that will stay that way for as long as we both shall live.

The problem with solely relying on customs and traditions is that abuse tend to occur quite frequently. For example, while those people in the cult here in Texas believe that its OK to marry your 12 yo daughter to a 40yo man and have her become a mother at 13, In both US and Philippines, this is pedophilia ! For Bedouin men who consider their prized possessions as their sword, their steed and their wife in that order...well he considers her a possession and therefore treats her  as such. Gives her a good beating when needed and uses her when he pleases. :-[

I think legally its very tricky, but if the population of a certain place merits that a law making a polygamous union be legalized, then it should be legalized out of necessity. That will leave less people in the gray areas of the legal system. But if the general populace does not require it, or it does not serve any widespread purpose, then why spend the time, money and energy to legalize it.

They can always flee to the jungle...or build their own compounds and become autonomous  8)

LoL! And then that little 'autonomous' land became a Federal State known as Utah.

Diha bya sad sila gipang bring up nga good points, masabot sa akong utok, pero murag dili matambalang ang luod sa akong dughan.

hala oi, live and let live. Malipayon man sila, kinsa man ta mo judge. wala man sad nag abuse ilang bana.
