Faith healing is healing claimed to be brought about by religious faith through prayers and/or rituals that, according to adherents, evoke a divine presence and power toward correcting disease and disability. Belief in divine intervention in illness or healing is related to religious belief. In common usage, faith healing refers to notably overt and ritualistic practices of communal prayer and gestures (such as laying on of hands) that are claimed to solicit divine intervention in initiating spiritual and literal healing.

Claims that prayer, divine intervention, or the ministrations of an individual healer can cure illness have been popular throughout history. Miraculous recoveries have been attributed to many techniques commonly lumped together as "faith healing". It can involve prayer, a visit to a religious shrine, or simply a strong belief in a supreme being.

The term is best known in connection with Christianity. Some people interpret the Bible, especially the New Testament, as teaching belief in, and practice of, faith healing. There have been claims that faith can cure blindness, deafness, cancer, AIDS, developmental disorders, anemia, arthritis, corns, defective speech, multiple sclerosis, skin rashes, total body paralysis, and various injuries. --Wiki

oo, motuo kog faith healing.  bisan unsaon pa ta ug tambal ug medical doctor, kun di ta mo-cooperate by believing we will be healed, then we cannot be healed.  that's faith.

but to go back to the definition of faith healing as posted by hubag (reply #1), yes to that, too.  there are just too many accounts of such miracle (and thus inexplicable in scientific terms) healings for anyone to disregard.  naturally, it is up to us to distinguish honest-to-goodness faith healers from the charlatans.  come to think of it, aren't there charlatan medical practitioners too?

i go to both medical doctors (thankfully, i'm covered by medical insurance) and faith healers (where there's no insurance) whenever i can.  either way, where one fails, the other makes up for.  ;D

i've seen this "event" many times, loaynon, in charismatic prayer sessions.  i believe they call it "slaying".  i understood such as manifestations of one of the gifts of the holy spirit.  (a fact that i presume you know much more about because of your theological studies.)

though i'm not part of the movement itself (i've attended enough sessions to conclude that it's not for me), i believe it's real.  the trajectory of the fall defies the laws of physics, to my mind.  it's too sudden and too unbelievable for a conscious human being not to show any instinctive reaction to break his fall.

i suppose the healing part is another matter.  some people can heal, some can't.

Slain by the Holy Spirit

This is one of the experiences in the Charismatic movement that defy the traditional beliefs of many Catholics. When someone prays over another person, sometimes he or she receives a touch of the Holy Spirit and falls to the ground. The person is filled with great peace; it is an encounter with God in a very serene atmosphere. Somehow the person is disconnected with reality and enters into a state of joy in the Lord.

Of course we must not believe everything we see, specially when some people fake the experience or when some of the people who pray push the others to the ground. We are not talking about this here.

To be slain in the Spirit is a true experience when the right people are involved and when the Holy Spirit makes His manifestation; the ways of the Lord are above our ways and the wind of the Spirit blows where it pleases [John 3:8]. It is very easy to condemn what we don't know says St. Peter.[2 Peter 2:12]

David and the high priests fell on their faces when they saw an angel standing between earth and Heaven [1 Chronicles 21:16]

Ezequiel came before the Presence of God and He fell upon his face [Ezekiel 1:26-28]

Daniel also had a similar experience, He lost his strength [Daniel 8:17-18]

When St. John the Apostle had his encounter with Our Lord, he fell at His feet, feeling as dead. [Apocalypse 1:17]

Father Jun was referring to Fr Fernando Suarez. I was there and I experienced the spiritual healing after he celebrated the mass. As of slaying of the Holy Spirit, nakatilaw pod ko. We are all in a row for some healing ( he asked us to touch the part of our body where our illness lies), I touched my knee which was once injured after a biking accident.  It was my turn, as he tried to touch my forehead, I fell . Morag nakatulog nga hinanok. Tingali after 3-5 minutes maulian ka nga gaan ang lawas.

The System of Healing Used by the Filipino Espiritistas

The practice of faith healing and psychic surgery in the Philippines has fascinated many Westerners since the first accounts by observers reached the outside world in the late 1950s prior to the onset of complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) frameworks.  The practice of psychic surgery by Filipino espiritistas (faith healers, who claim to communicate with discarnate entities), a technique of purportedly entering the human body with bare hands and without the use of anesthetics, defies the laws of medical science as they are currently understood.  Serious study of psychic surgery has been neglected by mainstream academic and scientific communities, simply because the phenomenon lies far outside the generally accepted concepts and applications of allopathic medicine, the dominant form of medicine practiced in the West and in other industrialized cultures.  Psychic surgeons are under constant scrutiny because people often cannot believe their own eyes when observing the phenomena and assume the practitioners are merely master magicians utilizing sleight-of-hand.

In the West, this practice would commonly constitute fraud since the medical establishment does not recognize the use of therapeutic sleight-of-hand, which, at best, is considered to evoke a placebo or expectation effect resulting in positive outcomes.  In spite of significant results of placebo surgeries performed in the early 1950s by Henry Beecher and Leonard Cobb and associates (cited in Harrington, 1977, p. 22), prior to increased ethical restraints in the United States, this practice has largely been scoffed at or ignored.  However, the data will show that over the past half century, many patients continue to report remarkable recoveries at the hands of the psychic surgeons in the Philippines (Krippner, 1976; Krippner & Villoldo, 1976; Licauco,1977,1992,1999; Martin, 1998, 1999; McDowall, 1998; Sherman, 1966; Sladek, 1976; Stelter, 1976; Valentine, 1973).

The earliest accounts of psychic surgery were published by curiosity-seeking laypersons in search of “fantastic and unusual” phenomena in Asia (Ormond & McGill, 1959).  These early writings were followed in subsequent decades by publications that included speculations and theories by parapsychologists on this phenomenon and how it should be explained within academic and scientific communities.  The data presented here have been compiled from popular books and scholarly articles written by parapsychologists, psychical researchers, anthropologists, and physicians, as well as practitioners of so-called New Age healing techniques and other professionals using complementary and alternative healing systems.

The research on psychic surgery is troublesome for several reasons that involve conceptual problems of the application of either parapsychological concepts or mainstream scientific methods to a spiritually based practice.  Theories of the psychokinetic displays of alleged healers include materialization, dematerialization, and teleportation, as well as esoteric speculations about energy transference.  It is debatable whether the technology exists to test these theories put forth by psychical researchers such as Meek (1987), Stelter (1976), parapsychologist Krippner (1976), and others, regarding how the psychic surgeons are affecting people’s health and illness.

"We must remind ourselves that to this day we do not possess any scientific tool—any detector—that can furnish us with direct proof of psychic energies or thought.  The measure of electrical brain waves (EEG) in no way directly establishes thoughts and feelings, as laymen believe; it may indicate nothing more than secondary action." (Stelter, 1976, p. 215)

The explanations that have been applied to the practice of psychic surgery range from the use of therapeutic sleight-of-hand producing a placebo effect (Krippner, 1976; Martin, 1998), or, on the other hand, to actual physical manipulations taking place through the spiritual body (Lampis, 1999), the hypothetical bioplasmic body (Sherman, 1966; Valentine, 1973), or in the so-called fourth dimension (Ormond & McGill, 1959).

“Proponents point to controlled studies showing that humans are capable of both extrasensory perception (ESP) and of exerting psychokinetic (mind over matter) effects on objects and organisms” (Walsh, 1990, pp. 194-95). However, research outcomes based on scientific methods have generally been limited.  An inclusive study will recognize that the practice of psychic surgery requires further research in the emerging field of complementary and alternative medicine, beginning with an accurate description of the Filipino espiritistas’ system of healing.

my stand so far, thus:

as pointed out in this article, proofs of healing by faith and its process are deemed to be believable only if they can be tested by technology in line with current western medicine.  that technology still does not exist.  while this stand has its merits on one hand, should everything be dependent on technology on the other?  do we need proof through technological tests that prayers work?

if faith healing works for you, then let your belief in it (including psychic surgery) be based on that personal experience.

Psychic Surgery healing in the Philippines

by Patrick Hamouy

(Patrick Hamouy has since 1997 taken groups of people to the Philippines to visit Psychic Surgeons. He has worked with over 40 surgeons. His experience in organising trips to the Philippines is wide. He has a list of reliable contacts for hotels, transports, dentist etc..  He knows the pitfall to avoid in this lovely country.  His web site is www.therapies.com/surgery)

No other form of Alternative Therapy has caused more controversy than Psychic Surgery.  It has been tested and analysed by scientists on numerous occasions.  Proved genuine, then proved quackery... and the controversy still rages.

I have personally worked with over 40 different surgeons since 1997 and I have only retained 4.  These 4 I believe to be genuine.  The others I let go of as they either were cheating, were not powerful enough or were unethical.  Be very careful if you go to Philippines on your own.  Most people who have tried this came back disappointed.

The most tested of Psychic surgeons still alive today is Jun Labo.  American and Japanese doctors have tested him genuine on numerous occasions and a film staring Burt Lancaster was shot proving that Jun is genuine.  The film was banned one week after release… and the controversy still rages about Jun's gift.

Psychic Surgery is Impossible I am often told.  Yes, but only according to modern scientific beliefs.  What happens cannot be explained rationally.  But then 100 years ago who would have believed that you could talk to somebody the other side of the earth using a mobile phone.  How do images appear on your TV screen?  I cannot explain this?

How is Psychic Surgery performed?

Basically, a Psychic Surgeon enters a person's body using his/her bare hands and manually removes diseased tissues, tumours, calcium deposits, pus etc., painlessly from the patient's body, coming out without leaving any visible marks or scars.

No drugs are used and the person, in most cases, does not feel any discomfort.  When a pain is felt it is usually because the part of the body where the surgery takes place was already sensitive or that the person tensed up during the surgery.  The wound heals immediately and the person is able to resume a normal life within a few minutes.

When you ask a Psychic Surgeon to explain his work, he will tell you (in most cases) that he does not perform the surgery but that the Holy Spirit channels him.

Is Psychic Surgery only practised in the Philippines?

It is true that there are more Psychic Surgeons in the Philippines than anywhere else in the world.  Their concentration in the Philippines is observed in Manila, Pangasinan, Baguio and Cebu.

Many theories have been suggested to explain this:

1. The concentration of Spiritist churches that train healers and psychic surgeons is unique to the Philippines.

2. Filipinos believe in spirits that they call "anitos".  They also believe in nature spirits that inhabits every part of the habitat (mountains, caves, rivers etc.).  This makes communication with the spirit world much more natural than it does for the rest of us.

3. The Philippines lies on top of the sunken continent of Lemuria.  Lemurians had advanced psychic powers and intuition.  The Filipinos have inherited these qualities.

4. Poverty is rampant in the Philippines; many cannot seek medical care, and have to rely heavily on local healers.

However, some form of Psychic Surgery has also been documented in the Amazons, Brazil, Indonesia and Africa.  What conditions can be treated?  The following represents only a few examples of conditions I have seen treated by the various Bare Hand Surgeons I visit:

* Seven years ago, Bare Hand Surgery was performed on a friend of mine suffering from Parkinson's disease.  This successfully stopped the progression of the disease for many years.

* A Psychic surgeon cleared "growths" from around my prostate.  He then left a Kleenex tissue inside my body overnight to prevent the seeping of blood back in the testicles (I could feel the tissue inside me).

* I had a 12-inch tumor removed from my large intestines.  I was eating a normal meal half an hour later.

* A surgeon cleared the ovaries and fallopian tubes of a patient.

* Another patient had 12 feet of growth removed from his colon.  He had been suffering from IBS for years.  IBS is now gone.

* I had 42 tumors removed from my liver over a period of two weeks in September 2001.  This was witnessed by 5 participants.

* The eyes of a person suffering from cataracts where "cleaned".

* One member of our group had growths that were attached to her spine removed.  This lady had had problems moving her head fully and had suffered from chronic pains in her shoulders for many years.  The instant improvement to the head was obvious and her shoulder pains have now completely disappeared.  Months of physical therapy had previously had very little impact.

* One surgeon removed many diseased tissues from another group member.  This man was gradually losing the use of his hand and arm and the left side of his body was slowly being paralyzed.  He is now well and full of energy.

* I witnessed two different Bare Hand Surgeons successfully remove deep brain tumors from two different patients.

* A "goiter" was cleared from a man's throat.

* One surgeon removed numerous tumors from the reproductive organs of a patient who was suffering from terminal cancer.  This person is now feeling alright.

* One surgeon cleaned the arteries around the heart of a patient.

* etc…. etc.. the list is too long to mention.

Most of this has been filmed and can be seen on videotape.

Basically, Bare Hand Surgeons do not specialize in any specific disease.  They work with "energy" on everything presented to them.

Is there any guarantee of success?  No.

I strongly recommend that you seek medical advice and care for any medical condition from which you may suffer.

I believe in Medical Healing. I also know that one's spiritual life can help in that person's coping of any medical ailments. Spirituality has a psychological empowering effect that can help reduce mental strain , particularly during intense /painful medical procedures.
