lorenz, one of our dogs has asthma. no vet in cebu was able to treat him so far. one of them said 'tuseran' will do. it didn't work. and i read somewhere that human medicines aren't good for dogs, huhuhu.

looy kaayo si rex kay kun i-'walk-the-dog' mo-collapse intawon usahay. it's making me sad. if no animal doctor will do, can a human doctor do something? for obvious reasons, i cannot go to a human doctor here with a dog as a patient. but here in tb, miracles are not far away. any tips, please? rex will be celebrating his 10th birthday this coming month of may.

Hi Isles,

I'd be very much glad to help. How many years has Rex had asthma?

So since you are the mom of Rex, id like to give you a little info on asthma (tho i know you read into it already); asthma is due to the continuous constriction of the vascular smooth muscle that is found around the respiratory tubules (normally, these smooth muscles are able to constrict and relax , however, in asthma, the smooth muscles fire at a rapid rate and significantly decrease the amount of air to the respiratory system).

I'm no way a specialist in animals, but humans and dogs do share the fundamentals of physiology and anatomy. I would recommend you give Rex some kind of asthma medication that can treat the constriction of the smooth muscle. I would recommend you get a medicine called Albuterol or Salmeterol (do note that these drugs are inhalants, so you would have to open Rex's mouth and spray it into his mouth). If you would prefer oral medication (capsule or tablet form), you can get theophylline, montelukast.

You can get these in your local pharmacy. Ask the pharmacist for children's preparation.

I do not know why the doctor you talked to recommended Tuseran when that is used only for cough and cold.

Another quick question, how much does Rex weigh? Repost it here so i can do a proper calculation in how much of the drug should you ask the pharmacy to prepare.

Another quick question, how much does Rex weigh? Repost it here so i can do a proper calculation in how much of the drug should you ask the pharmacy to prepare.

i'll ask our cebu household about rex's weight. (i arrived in manila last night.) i hope they know what to do. rex happens to be a mestizo filipino-german shepherd. he may not be that big, but still i can't carry him. he's a good dog; not that smart, maybe, but a very gentle one. his original owner had died of breast cancer some seven years ago. rex was given to us as a puppy that urgently needed a home.

Thank You for sharing the warm little biography of Rex ! hehe, the name makes me think of the movie Jurassic Park (specifically the tyrannosaurus rex dino) lol. Mestizo Filipino-German shepherd diay si Rex? Ka cute pod.

I do know that vets here in the states give dogs who have asthma an oral drug called montelukast (this is also used for human patients w/ asthma).

At 10 years (he is about 70 dog years), it will be common to see the ailments related to aging, Isles. I hope that Rex continues to be loving to you and your family for more years to come.

hala ka... motuo ka o di, gi-asthma siya human giwisiwisi ang usa ka iring layaw. nahadlok siya ug ang iring sa siniyagit nako. wa maunsa ang iring, pero nitagam na gyod ug balik sa amo. friendly siya sa among own irings, masuko lang gyod siya kun naay strangers nga moanha. sa ako lang, kun maka-asthma pa ang iring, dugay na unta kong gi-asthma. what i know is makagaba ang iring. i hope di unta tantong nagabaan si rex.

hehe, og mo kaon ang ero sa balhibo sa iring , pwede sigoro. kining iring maka transmit ni sila og histoplasmosis , mao ni i always warn my pregnant patients if they have a cat kai maka transmit ang iring (especially kittens) og histoplasmosis sa bata.

poor rex. i hope they'll hurry with the dog run that i asked them to make. he just might enjoy it. yes, i'll update you the soonest. thanks.

rex our beautiful dog died in his sleep monday, april 2. the vet who rushed to the house was a trifle too late. of course, i cried, we all cried, a river.
