Is It Alright To Flirt With Your Doctor? Medical Intern?
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:21:36 AM »
I notice that at work, alot of patients seem to flirt with the older staff. And the nurses, di ko mo generalize sa tanan, but I do notice that alot of nurses flirt with the Medical Doctors or the Medical Student Interns.

I was ding acid bases work today and being quizzed by my proctor/ preceptor when a nursing student/ 1st year nurse came up to me and said something. It was not work related at all.

Rather, it was: "Hi! Do you have a girl friend? You're cute!"

Ako. Ning smile. Pero. Dili baja ni professional in the work place. I mean. I take her comment as a compliment. But there is a time and place for this, and surely, I did not appreciate being disturbed from work to be asked if I had a gf.

Ning remark baja ko balik nija, "Thanks. Sweety. Yes I do have a girl friend."

~~

On her defense tho. She was cute. I will not deny that. ha ha ha.
But still...

For me, the work place should be just that: The Work Place.

~

Wa lang ko ning express nija my concern kai i did not feel to do so. But on the drive back from work. I thought about it.

Can  you imagine, I, was talking to my preceptor discussing the patient's metabolic acidosis and the MOA (mechanism of action) of the process and how to treat this particular condition.

Then out of no where, we were interrupted, I, thought it was an emergency. Took care of it. But only to be asked not a medical quesiton, but a personal one.

For me, this was unprofessional. My proctor was annoyed at this incident, and I did feel bad. I took full responsibility for the unprofessional situation.

Ah. Just venting lang ko diri.

It's wrong!
Interrupting a work-related discussion just
to get attention by asking personal question
  is rude and unethical.
Namasin makabana ug doctor kuwang sa disiplina
  tong bayhana.

Mao lagi, I think i know her intention.

Moral of the story: Professional Conduct must always be maintained in the hospital floor.

We know this, Ma'am and I know you know this too because you are a veteran professional R.N.

And you and many nurses who have seen thousands of patients and cases know the necessity of a professional environment.

ESPECIALLY in the medical field.

Cheers!

How true that is, in the medical field there is no room for error,
though its documented the med errors that happened many
 times over.
Full attention needs to be on the patient to be treated as a
human being not as an object though in the third world
country like the Philippines ang mga  way kwarta  lahi
ang treatment kay sa naay ikabayad.

Pero diri sa U.S. makiha ka diretso, I can testify into this
because last year sa akong  gitrabahoan naapil ko sa
gitawag for deposition kay may patient sa among unit
namatay, gigukod sa pamilya ang  ospital.

Wala  mamatay sa akong shift  pero as a witness kay days
ago before the incident, usa ko sa mga nurse niya.
But to make it short, na settle ra before miatubang sa
  court.

Thank the Lord for His  help once again.

Thank the Lord for His  help once again.

Thank you for sharing this statement, Ma'am.

After this incident, I was given a strict lesson from my medical preceptor. It was rather annoying, in my part that this young nurse interrupted us in our lesson. As my preceptor is a very strict man, he did give me a "lecture" in evading these "unprofessional situations". I was annoyed since I was put to blame and was subject to his litany of disapprovals and what not.

I respect his lesson and lecture, as my attending physician and medical preceptor, I will honor his view and his medical knowledge.

For me lang, it is okay to talk and discuss when the shift is over, or during breaks, however, given the situation that I was with a patient and was under supervision by the attending. It was not the proper time. For me, bitaw, I do take the time to be kind to the nurses and the nursing staff. During breaks and what not. However, the given situation was not opportune.

Mao na. Be firm jud. The trait of a great physician is being firm and resolute.

For me, what really annoys me jud is when I am at work and talking with my colleagues to discuss patient charts, and some older nurses joke around all the time and try to say how we can be introduced to somebody's so and so's daughter who is single and who is a nursing student etc. etc. How degrading.

We did not go into this profession or sweated and sacrificed to be treated as if we are eligible bachelors etc.

I really do not like that. Nor do I like that mentality of some people. You're at work. WORK.

Ako lang. Di jud ko mo sulti. Quiet lang jud ko didto. I am merely expressing it here.

Mo share ko lang to the world (those who wish to hear and those who do not want to hear, don't read it):

One gets a proud and satisfying feeling in treating a patient, in identifying if the patient has an underlying disease, that can be treated. Or if we identify that the patient is acidotic, or alkalotic. When one is introduced to a patient who is pedriatic and in the ER and are given the honor to stittch the wound on that ptaient, caomfort them and given them a reason to smile and to look forward to. There is a miraculous feeling in this.

You go to the hospital floor. Everything that you read about in the text books..in neurophysiology, in cardiopathology, in general pathology, in embryology, in pharmacology etc. As a student one memorizes facts, and clinical signs, but it is different. When you are exposed to the setting, see the patient, feel the patient, everything changes.

You see there is such sacred relationship between the Doctor/Intern and the Patient. The patient goes to the doctor and offers his / her life and places it in your hand. This relationship and this precious bond is unique. Totally unique. Therefore, the gravity of this relationship requires and decrees proper and astute respect of that Doctor-Patient Interaction.

As a physician in training, medical interns are required to exude a level of confidence to their patient and the surrounding staff. You are required to talk and to explain in a calm and assertive manner. You are a student who has sacrificed and seen your years away, to the beauty of this profession. And such, due to the gravity of this profession and what it entails and what it REQUIRES and individual to do, one has to abide by the sacred and sanctified position of the medical provider.

Acting and talking in proper etiquette is mandated. Firm and Resolute. Conscious and Understanding. Firm and Resolute. We are reminded this time and time again by our instructors and by our learned Physician Peers so as to command the presence of the floor. And the nursing staff and allied health staff who complete the order. And to exude a level of control of the setting so as to provide the patient with some kind of restitution and comfort despite their ailing condition.

There is NO ROOM for unprofessional conduct in the hospital floor.
You want to talk and flirt, go outside in a diner, or in the cafeteria.

Lorenzo.

To add lang;

Thousands of Physicians have been sued by medical malpractice for "flirting" back with staff and patients.

Again. A result of unprofessional / indecent conduct.
