i'm not afraid. para doctor...
what i'm afraid of is the needle. how i hate it when i'm pricked for blood samples.
ang akong di ganahan is the long wait. also, i noticed most doctors here aren't too keen on insurance. they prefer patients who bring cash. i can't blame them. insurance companies aren't also too keen on paying. doctors say these companies pay only 80% of the total cost at most. so the gimmick in hospitals is they charge more for patients with insurance. an example is the x-ray, which i noticed. normally, laboratories charge only 350 pesos per chest x-ray. in the case of the insured, like me, the bill is 500 pesos.
lately, i wanted an executive physical check-up. the doctor told me that it's not possible as they only check for complaints. i said well, i'm complaining about everything about me. he cannot hide his smile. still, he denied me a thorough check-up. i told the banana republic to complain about this to the insurance company because our monthly insurance payments are not something to sneeze at.
it all goes down to money matters. sad.
he he he, at first, i was afraid of needles. when i was a 1st year medical student, i dreaded going to anatomy and physiology class because my professor made it a point that we , or as he used to refer to us as, "student doctors", not be afraid of the instruments we are to use.
the first time i had to stick myself with a needle was pure anguish. after a while, i became numb to the pain so to say. my friend and fellow colleague, Dr. Mendes, who is now currently doing his internal medicine rotation, used to sit with me on the corner while we poked ourselves to perfect our IV access skills. lol!
Now, i think i safely say that i am adequate at getting peripheral iv access.
dili na ko ma hadlok sa needle. promise.
