Do you believe in Prophecy?...and Why?
« on: September 10, 2007, 12:26:19 AM »
It is commonly known that nobody can tell the future.  A path of life in every individual is to follow and accepted as ones fate.  And how did it come that there are lot of so-called Fortune tellers? Is this an art of Humbug, Business or just a new trend of the non satisfied and disappointed generations?

I dont believe in prophesy or any kind of arts associated with the occult. I only believe in two things: My Lord God and in myself.

+++

Deuteronomy 18:9–12. Moses addresses the people just before they cross the Jordan River to enter the promised land and drive out the pagan nations. He says,

When you come into the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur (that is, an enchanter, one who looks for and uses omens), or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord; and because of these abominable practices the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

Moses mentions eight spiritist activities: divination, soothsaying, augury, sorcery, the use of charms, mediums, wizardry, or necromancy. These are not clearly distinct activities; they overlap and are sometimes used interchangeably. What they have in common is that they all involve efforts to obtain knowledge which is ordinarily hidden, and the means of attaining it is through dealings with the spirit world or with mysterious supra-natural forces.

Beware of false prophets and the heresies in their 'prophecies'.

2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

i agree, 'te.
Anyone who claims to have the ability to commune with the dead like John Edwards etc are liars and deceivers. People who go to those choose to believe and choose to swallow their lies. A desperate mind will make itself believe anything--they need some kind of rectification--and the devil's demons revels in the spreading of false truths for those who are in need. He is afterall the King of Lies, the Most Unholy, the great Protester--who so protested the hosts of heaven even unto God, day and night until he was cast down. And these fortune tellers and psychic readers take advantage of that psychological and spiritual weakness.

These are the worst kinds of people, in my opinion. Making money of other people's loss and mourning. May God rebuke them--may they be anathematized..

My message to everyone is that there is a Devil in the world that lurks and tempts men's souls to play with them in their time of despair. Be strong. Pain is part of life. Despair not, for time everlasting awaits us in our physical end.

Couple of summers ago, 'te, I went with my group of friends to South Street in Philadelphia and we went to this one kiosk that was some kind of psychic reader. As we entered the boutique, I immediately had a gut feeling to get out of there. I didn't go in. Though my friends went in to hear the psychic's words (she used tarrot cards, apparently)--i felt so sick to even consider going there. That psychic charged my friends 20 dollars each per reading. And from what my friends told me, the readings and 'prophesies' were absolutely vague. She told my one friend that a 'big change' will occur in her life, no duh, changes occur in every people's lives. I seriously cannot believe that people actually fall for these kinds of scams and lies.

Things happen because you let them happen. Specially these kinds of disgusting lies. Psychics, fortune tellers are mere professional liars.

There is no honesty in that profession.

Just like if you construct a new house before you will start for everything kailangan ipa- punsoy ang lugar.

Thats one thing that I observe that my parents carry. When our house was still under construction back in 1995, my father would take us to the developmental site and I can remember being a 11  year old walking with him as he inspected the base and the construction (note that my father was very concerned about the structural integrity and would interfere to input his views---as he was a veteran Civil Engineer--and for years was a Supervisor for a civil engineering firm in Riyadh--so he carried that mannerism). But despite this, my father was very superstitious about things--same with my mother. They both placed about 5 dollars worth of quarters in each corner of the base of the house as it was still being built. And even to this day--in each of our 6 bedrooms in our house--there are quarters in every corner. I don't know if this is a Filipino tradition, but that is one thing that does stand out.
My mom also practices Feng Shui--and arranges everything according to that philosophy.

I personally respect my parent's views, but one thing that I don't share is their superstitious nature. There is no biological and scientific explanation for it. But being my parents, I respect their actions no matter what, it is mandatory by the right of parenthood.

You are what a good son is, Dodong!

As to the coins, I only knew during New Years, my aunt would sprinkle coins all over the house and would open all doors and windows and turn on all lights, bang and honk all there is to bang and honk, etc.  As to our home, not only that my parents didn't have much coins to sprinkle around the house, dili pod mag dugay ang coins Dong kay pamuniton man dayon ipalit ug ice candy!

Hahaha that what I was thinking. Because even my aunt, my mom's sister, doesnt really hold on to the kind of superstitions that my parents hold on to. Its very interesting tho because they're medical professionals and its not like they can explain their superstitions scientifically--but they hold on to it anyways.

One other example was this summer we went to central Pennsylvania to sight see the Amish region, and visit the historic train stations. We stayed at an Indian-owned hotel and my parents were angry at me because I recommended we stay at the hotel (note that most of the other hotels were already booked or occupied)--and when my mom and I went to the register to pay for the two rooms--my mom immediately noticed that the Indian lady who was servicing us had a black dot on her tongue. I dont know why, but when we went back to the car--my mom told my dad this and they both were angry. Something about people with black dots on their tongue--I dont know. All I know was that I was really annoyed at how they were treating me--as if it was my fault that we were staying in a hotel that was owned by a woman who had a black dot on her tongue. What is the importance of that black dot anyway?
All I know is that the next day when we drove off, my mom and my dad told all of us to brush our arms, our heads, our faces, and our shoulders. It was ridiculous. As a scientist and as a realist---I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Maybe you guys can explain to me about the meaning of brushing one's arms, torso, face and shoulders after leaving an area that was owned by a person who had a black dot? Please. I'd appreciate it.

hahahahha I don't have a scientific explanation as well Dong but sa Bohol they thought that's buyagan and something will happen to you like rashes or even go further to thinking that people that like woman can say something and you are a dead meat! hahahah

Just take note, when we were young, there was this woman in our baryo whose one side of the face was drooping (na hiwi!) and the talk was that the ingkanta slapped her because the ingkanta loved the woman's husband and that the ingkanta was jealous.  And at that time, I believed it was true.  Fast forward, years later, when I got to the big city, worked in the bank, one morning, my lady boss had that same face.  the doctor's finding?  Bell's palsy!

ayyyy..luuy pood no?
Yea thats one thing that I find very alien towards Filipino culture at times is the superstition that still permeates in the rural community. I'm way too Americanized in the manner of thinking and for me to try to comprehend it is nearly impossible. All these talks of diwatas, inkantas, wakwaks etc...
I told my mom that before and she told me but she still believes in spirits in the Philippines. The 'old' country. Who knows--maybe there might be some truth to it..maybe there isn't, but I sure do not believe in it.

It is interesting to listen to the stories tho because I can't help but smile as I bear witness to the cultural  beauty of Filipino oral folklore. Clearly tho these stories show the old pagan and animistic belief sytems of our people of pre-Pax Hispanica. I appreciate its cultural integrity, but do not recognize it as a truth.

When I was in elementary, my Mom brought me to this mananambal (not manananggal ha!) na lalaki whose voice changed to, allegedly, the voice of Sto. Nino who could cure all diseases and prevent one from having bujag-bujag.  When the guy started to have like an epileptic seizure then his voice became that of a small boy.  I tell you, I just couldn't help buy laugh and laugh and my Mom pinched me who know where and I was still laughing.  How ridiculous people believe in that stuff!

Kamo ra baya si Grazie ga bunyag ana ron..... ;D..unsa may atong hisgotan ron Mananagna o Manananggal ba?

Ang Mananagna - iyang tagna-on ug makalupad ba ang Mananaggal.

Ang Manananggal - iyang tuyo-on ug di makalupad aron ma-amaw ang  tag-an sa Mananagna. :-\ Lisod!

It is commonly known that nobody can tell the future.  A path of life in every individual is to follow and accepted as ones fate.  And how did it come that there are lot of so-called Fortune tellers? Is this an art of Humbug, Business or just a new trend of the non satisfied and disappointed generations?

Of course I do. The gift of prophesy is one of the gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT !
