Are you a member of Greek named frat/sors in college days?
« on: January 30, 2009, 11:02:59 PM »
I´m a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Frat/ Sigma Mu Alpha Sorority during my college years in formerly Rafael Palma College now University of Bohol
It was a surprise that a brod from Iligan City invited me to join the Forum and lo and behold.., I saw old brods and sis all over the world.
The website was designed by Brod Samuel Matunog , a lawyer ,head of PIA in Davao City. Brod Samuel was from Siliman University but he hails from Bohol also, his mother is Relampagos.
I was greeted by the younger generations and the most wonderful part, I met a brod who I initiated 30 years ago. Recalling those happy days really warms my heart.
How about you?

Alpha Sigma Phi in Bohol traces its roots back to Central Mindanao University in Musuan, Bukidnon. It was brought on Boholano Soil in 1965 and found its home at the Rafael Palma College (now University of Bohol). Alphans Freddie Graciosa, Carlos Buenachita, David Porticos and Norie Namoc organized the first Alphan community in the college by recruiting and persistently initiating students "the Musuan way". The initiations lasted
six consecutive weeks of psychological tests and weekends of hazing. The usual rendezvous was at the former "Gun Club" in Taloto, Tagbilaran City which is now where the First Consolidated Bank (FCB) main office is located.

There were 13 who survived the initiation and they comprise the pioneer Alphans of what would be known as the Theta Chapter: herbert Obenza, Tito Villanueva, Medong Aceron, Orlando Pizana, Adriano Damalerio (+), Jesus Garcia, Pepe Pacatang (+), Mar Dayo, Gary Suganob, Tito Torrefranca (+), Joe Javier (+), Cesar Copaler, and Pascual Cabando, Dr. Victoriano "Wil" Tirol, Liux Lofranco and Engr. Vir Ungab were the advisers and
honorary members of the newly organized Alpha Sigma Phi. Six years later, Vir Ungab and Liux Lofranco submitted themselves to the initiation procedures and became full-fledge Alphans.

In 1967 two Alphans from Bohol, Manuel Cempron and Valeriano Vitor joined the YMCA-sponsored leadership traning in Dasmarinas, Cavite. Being newly accepted, they proudly wore t-shirts with the Alpha Sigma Phi logo. It was how they were noticed by delegates from Cebu who also happened to be Alphans. The initial encounter was lukewarm understandably because of mistrust as to the authencity of the other. For one, they did
not share the common traditional triangle tattoo at the base of the right thumb. The triangular dot tattoo is of Musuan origin, like the Boholano Alphans, while the Cebu Alphans were initiated by the Silliman group. However, that initial encounter opened opportunities for future linkage and interaction between Alphans from Bohol, Cebu and Negros.

This later on bloomed into subsequent merging into one Alpha Sigma Phi Philippines, Inc.

In the succeding years, Alpha Sigma Phi consistently increased in number and became one of the most active fraternities on campus. It produced the best because it recruited the best. It sent representatives to various campus activities and won many awards in both academic and in literary competations. In 1971, the UB chapter allowed the affiliation of Saint James College (now Philippine Maritime Institute-PMI) and Holy Name College (later renamed Divine Word College, now Holy Name University) to the University of Bohol Chapter. Among the survivors were Brods Jun Lumanas, Jun Rebosura, Jun Bandala, Jun Columnas and Boloy Dominise.

Towards the advent of 1972, Alpha Sigma Phi in Bohol, as in the rest of the country was forced to go underground due to martial law when all forms of students organizations and movements were viewed as anti-government. The chapter became inactive and never made new recruitments. The chapter was revived in 1978, but this time, it was operating underground. The activities at that time were accorded to the heroic deeds of Brods
Danilo Gocila, George Galapin, Edgar Durante and Zosimo Basanez who took the pains of maintaining the quality of members despite the limitations and restrictions enforced by government. By that time, many of the alumni in Bohol were from other chapters who affiliated themselves with the rest of the Bohol alumni.

The UB Chapter used to hold the name Beta Chapter having evolved from CMU, until 1978 when Greek letter names were formally assigned to all chapters based on the newly approved constitution and by-laws during the Davao convention. Bohol was not able to send a representatives in that convention.

In April 1982, was the venue of the 4th Bienial National Convention of Alpha Sigma Phi wich was attended by Richard Gibbs, the Grand Senior President of Alpha Sigma Phi - USA. That was a significant part of the history of Alpha Sigma Phi not only for Bohol, but for Alpha Sigma Phi Philippines because it was during the convention when Richard Gibbs became an honorary member of Alpha Sigma Phi Philippines, Inc.

Meanwhile, Theta Chapter of the University of Bohol continued as the mother chapter not just for Alphans from DWC and PMI, but also from the Bohol Agricultural College in 1983. Both alumni and undergraduate members had the opportunity to constantly interact with each other when there are activities.
