Medical definitions of Death:

"death (death) (deth) the cessation of life; permanent cessation of all vital bodily functions. For legal and medical purposes, the following definition of death has been proposed-the irreversible cessation of all of the following: (1) total cerebral function, usually assessed by EEG as flat-line (2) spontaneous function of the respiratory system, and (3) spontaneous function of the circulatory system...

brain [death]. irreversible brain damage as manifested by absolute unresponsiveness to all stimuli, absence of all spontaneous muscle activity, including respiration, shivering, etc., and an isoelectric electroencephalogram for 30 minutes, all in the absence of hypothermia or intoxication by central nervous system depressants. Called also irreversible coma and cerebral d[eath]."

For the Roman Catholic Church death is the 'complete and final separation of the soul from the body'. However the Vatican has conceded that diagnosing death is a subject for medicine, not the Church. In 1957 Pope Pius XII raised the concerns over whether doctors might be 'continuing the resuscitation process, despite the fact that the soul may already have left the body.' He even asked one of the central questions confronting modern medicine, namely whether 'death had already occurred after grave trauma to the brain, which has provoked deep unconsciousness and central breathing paralysis, the fatal consequences of which have been retarded by artificial respiration.' The answer, he said, 'did not fall within the competence of the Church.'

It remains for the doctor and especially the anaesthesiologist, to give a clear and precise definition of 'death' and the 'moment of death'
of a patient who passes away in a state of unconsciousness.

     -Pope Pius XII

The One, Holy, Roman Catholic Church's Teachings on what happens after the moment of death:

Although physical human bodies die, human souls never die. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that every spiritual soul "is immortal: It does not perish when it separates from the body at death, and it will be reunited with the body at the final Resurrection" (CCC 366).

So at the moment of death, the soul separates from the body, is judged immediately, and enters either heaven (immediately or through purgatory) or hell.

Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of heaven—through a purification or immediately—or immediate and everlasting damnation. (CCC 1022)

Every soul will unite with its resurrected body just prior to the Last Judgment ("Judgment Day") when Christ returns:

In the presence of Christ, who is Truth itself, the truth of each man’s relationship with God will be laid bare. The Last Judgment will reveal even to its furthest consequences the good each person has done or failed to do during his earthly life . . .

The Last Judgment will come when Christ returns in glory. Only the Father knows the day and the hour; only he determines the moment of its coming. Then through his Son Jesus Christ he will pronounce the final word on all history. We shall know the ultimate meaning of the whole work of creation and of the entire economy of salvation and understand the marvelous ways by which his Providence led everything towards its final end. The Last Judgment will reveal that God’s justice triumphs over all the injustices committed by his creatures and that God’s love is stronger than death. (CCC 1039-1040)

"Life is continuous, and is infinite." (Edgar Cayce)

i cannot give a credible personal opinion because i cannot say "been there, done that" to this question.  however, i can't help but think of edgar cayce (1877-1945) whose books i explored until a very nice jesuit priest who saw me lug one around offered to exchange it for any other book i wanted except about parapsychology or theosophy.

while i'm most comfortable with the catholic church's stand on death, i thought there's no harm in understanding the stand of other philosophies.  i must say that there's a line that connects all these beliefs by whatever name we call them.

edgar cayce is the most famous american psychic and one among those whose near-death experience is on record.  the following is an example.
Republic Act 8485 (Animal Welfare Act of 1998, Philippines), as amended and strengthened by House  Bill 6893 of 2013--- violation means a maximum of P250,000 fine with a corresponding three-year jail term and a minimum of P30,000 fine and six months imprisonment

A Verbatim Account of Cayce's Afterlife Journeys

The following is the only waking description of his journey in the trance state, taken verbatim from comments he made at a public lecture:

"I see myself as a tiny dot out of my physical body, which lies inert before me." [out-of-body] [orbs]
crossing_over - [Opinion] What happens at the moment of death? - Question and Answer

"I find myself oppressed by darkness and there is a feeling of terrific loneliness." [the void]

"Suddenly, I am conscious of a white beam of light, knowing that I must follow it or be lost." [the light]

"As I move along this path of light I gradually become conscious of various levels upon which there is movement." [the tunnel]  [various afterlife realms]
tunnel_blue - [Opinion] What happens at the moment of death? - Question and Answer

"Upon the first levels there are vague, horrible shapes, grotesque forms such as one sees in nightmares." [hell realm]

"Passing on, there begins to appear on either side misshapen forms of human beings with some part of the body magnified." [another hell realm]

"Again there is change and I become conscious of gray-hooded forms moving downward. Gradually, these become lighter in color." [heavenly realm]  [guides]

"Then the direction changes and these forms move upward and the color of the robes grows rapidly lighter." [higher heavenly realms]

"Next, there begins to appear on either side vague outlines of houses, walls, trees, etc., but everything is motionless." [I believe this realm is the physical realm which would appear outside of time.]

"As I pass on, there is more light and movement in what appear to be normal cities and towns. With the growth of movement I become conscious of sounds, at first indistinct rumblings, then music, laughter, and singing of birds. There is more and more light, the colors become very beautiful, and there is the sound of wonderful music. The houses are left behind; ahead there is only a blending of sound and color." [cities of light]  [heavenly music]

"Quite suddenly I come upon a Hall of Records. It is a hall without walls, without ceiling, but I am conscious of seeing an old man who hands me a large book, a record of the individual for whom I seek information." [a good description of the Temple of Knowledge that people refer to in other NDEs]

There was a time where I had a patient, a terminal patient, who was on life support, end-stage organ failure na. His wife, children had come to say good bye to him. This man could not talk, but did have his eyes open and was crying when his kids and wife were there saying their good byes. His family took turns saying their last goodbye to their father. And when it was his youngest child's turn, after that, the patient closed his eyes, and then he passed on.

I was there in that room when he passed. His soul was strong that the marker boards in the nursing station fell down. Kusug kaayo iyang espirito, before it was taken back home to God.

And yes, I did feel a presence that left that room. Tinuod gajod, nga og mamatay na ang tawo, mo gawas ang spirit sa lawas...
