MANILA, Philippines - One of the most modern submarines in the United States Navy surfaced last Sunday in Subic Bay in Zambales where it is currently deployed to ensure freedom of navigation in the Western Pacific.

The arrival of the Virginia-class fast attack submarine USS North Carolina (SSN-777) came as the Philippines is embroiled in a standoff with China for more than a month now in Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal, 124 nautical miles from mainland Zambales.

“The crew is proud of our recent contributions as part of our country’s commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation, peace and stability in the region,” said Richard Rhinehart, North Carolina’s commanding officer, in a press statement released by the United States-Pacific Command (USPACOM).

USS Carolina is the fourth submarine in the Virginia class, the Navy’s newest class of submarine and the first ship designed for the post-Cold War environment.

The submarine is designed to operate with stealth, agility and endurance in the world’s littoral regions, as well as the deep oceans.

Unlike the visits of other US vessels in the country, the docking of USS Carolina at Subic bolstered earlier speculations that the US government, while openly declaring that it will not interfere in any territorial dispute in the region, is also closely watching the prevailing standoff between the Philippines and China over ownership of Bajo de Masinloc or “Karburo” to local fishermen.

The Philippines and the US have a Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), which requires both parties to come to defend the other in the event of armed aggression.

While Philippine Navy (PN) officials appeared not to be fully aware of the USS Carolina’s presence in Subic, high-level sources said the submarine would be staying at the former US Naval base for re-provisioning and will leave on May 19.

USS Carolina, whose homeport is Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, is 350 feet long and weighs more than 7,800 tons when submerged.

The vessel is one of the stealthiest, most technologically advanced submarines in the world.

“She brings to the region the capability to conduct the full spectrum of potential submarine missions including anti-submarine warfare, naval special warfare involving special operations forces, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and mine warfare,” the USPACOM said in a press statement.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy’s flagship, BRP Gregorio del Pilar, a second-hand Hamilton-class cutter acquired from the US, was pulled from its maritime mission in the West Philippine Sea for maintenance.

But contrary to reports that the frigate’s weapons system bogged down at the height of the standoff in Panatag last week, everything is working, the Navy said.

“It’s just a scheduled maintenance. She underwent preventive maintenance last week,” Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Omar Tonsay said of the frigate.

Dili mo war ang US sa; China Kay trillion dollars pa any iyang utang sa mga singkit ug mata.

In case of war , the United States will repudiate its debt with China. The US economy is that of a 15 Trillion Dollar economy, we can survive without China, but the contrary does not hold true. China's major and largest trading partner is the United States. It's economy will collapse if America does not buy Chinese goods.

China cannot afford to further instigate the Philippines because it knows that the United States has already reestablished its position in the region. The more China barks, the further it is going to allow itself to be contained by the United States and neighboring powers.

Aside from the United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, The Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Australia, New Zealand want a "weaker" China.

It would be counter-productive for the Chinese CCP government to engage in a military conflict, it would be counter-intuitive for their own plans for regional preeminence. China will be forced to close its mouth and reduce military tension. It cannot afford a war with the USA right now. She (China) will reduce tension while trying to "save face" in the process.

The Philippines is a sensitive subject for Americans and the American Military; as a former colony of the United States, the country will always be a sensitive issue.

The Chinese do not understand the relationship nor do they remember how strong the bond is between the American and the Filipino. When the Imperial Japanese Army occupied the Philippines during the World War II, some 300,000 Japanese soldiers occupied the Philippines. America adopted a policy of "island hopping" to defeat the Japanese and bypassed Japanese-held islands while cutting off their supply in the process, thereby forcing the japanese defenders to starve to death.

When the United States was pressed with the issue of the Philippines, the commanders of the US Navy actually considered bypassing the Philippines considering the islands were heavily defended by Japanese army, air force, and navy. The plan was bypassing the Philippines for Formosa. However, that plan did not go through. Under the auspices of General. MacArthur as well as from the US High Command, the Invasion to retake the Philippines was initiated.

In the process, the United States mobilized the Combined US Navy's Pacific Fleet and some 250,000 soldiers to retake the Philippines from the Japanese. It was the Largest naval engagement and Largest naval invasion in the history of mankind. In the process, the United States Armed Forces lost 60,000 US Marines to retake the Philippines. That bloody sacrifice should be a reminder to the Chinese and any foreign power that would threaten Philippine independence and the Filipino people as a whole.

The United States will never allow the Philippines to succumb to a foreign power.

The United States also finalized the transfer of a 2nd Hamilton-Class frigate to the Philippine Navy, complete with radar, and all defense equipment. The United States also is going to provide additional defense equipment for the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar, include the point-point surface to air missile shields.

The 2nd Hamilton-Class frigate will be sent to the Philippines in late 2012. Now, the Philippine Navy will have 2 of them. :)
