Two Die in Bombings in Thailand’s Deep South
« on: April 13, 2020, 09:57:49 PM »
BENARNEWS- Two people were killed and 11 others injured in a series of night-time bombings in Thailand’s southern border on Friday, after security officials warned of a possible surge in attacks by Muslim rebels in the final days of Ramadan.
Friday night’s attacks – motorcycle bombs and hand grenades thrown from passing vehicles –took place in Padang Besar, a sub-district of Songkhla province, and Su-ngai Kolok, a border town in Narathiwat province, officials said.
In Padang Besar, a motorcycle-rigged bomb went off at a market, killing two women and injuring three other women who were dining there, according to local police.
Police identified the dead women as Aron Thammakhan and the second victim only by her nickname, “Preaw.”
And, in coordinated attacks in Su-ngai Kolok, four bombs exploded at a local nightspot, injuring eight people, one seriously. A fifth bomb was found in the vicinity but authorities were able to defuse it.
“We believe the insurgents are behind the coordinated attacks,” Pol. Lt. Col. Jaripat Thongdaeng said.
The two sites targeted in the attacks lie in a predominantly Muslim region near the Malaysian border known as the Deep South. For at least a decade, a separatist insurgency has gripped the region, claiming the lives of more than 6,000 people since 2004.
The bombings occurred amid reported efforts by Thailand’s military-led government to persuade various southern rebel groups to engage in peace talks.
The spate of bombings was the worst to hit the Deep South since mid-May, when a string of bombs went off over the course of three days in Yala province, injuring at least 14 people.
No group or individual claimed responsibility for the attacks.
‘Twisted teaching’
Earlier on Friday, Col. Pramote Prom-in, spokesman for the forward office of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4, held a press conference where he reiterated an earlier warning that the public should watch out for rebel attacks in the last 10 days of Ramadan. This year the Islamic holy month of fasting will end on July 17.
Rebels who carry out such attacks are twisting the tenets of Islam laid down in the Quran, he said.
“The situation in the last ten days of Ramadan will be worse due to the twisted teaching that [good deeds] will be doubled by killing and bombing people and government officials,” Col. Pramote said.
