The MH370 mystery: Give us truth and keep the mangosteens

THE Chinese relatives of the MH370 plane passengers received another briefing the other day.

From those sessions, they gained information without knowledge. They now know more about physics and less about the fate of their loved ones than anyone should have to bear.

This time, the relatives were addressed by top flight nerds. The plane must have ditched in the southern parts of the Indian Ocean, the relatives were told. This conclusion was drawn from sophisticated satellite data.

The relatives did not throw water bottles or stage protests. But their scepticism was summed up by Steven Wang, a de facto spokesman: “I don’t think that anything was explained to us ... there are all kinds of possibilities.”

As some Malaysian officials spouted global telemetry 101, others canvassed wacky new theories.

Food poisoning was being investigated, said Malaysia’s top-ranking police officer, Khalid Abu Bakar, heedless of comparisons with that cockpit scene in the spoof movie Flying High, when the captain realises he has eaten the fish and has a fit of overacting.

There’s nothing amusing about the loss of 239 missing souls. But there’s black humour in an investigation for which there can never be physical evidence. Food caterers have been interviewed at length, apparently. Stand by for a solemn announcement that salmonella at 37,000 feet cannot be ruled in — or out.

Other theories concern the plane’s cargo. Talk of gold, and a diabolical heist, has bubbled for weeks. That has been superseded by official statements about the mangosteens. The tropical fruit was on board, Malaysian police confirmed, in announcing how they tracked the pickers, packers, the shippers, the plane loaders and the buyers of the exotic cargo.

How any of this relates to a plane’s vanishing remains unclear.

Were the mangosteens jammed with anthrax spores set to spread at cruising altitude?

Has anyone noticed how mangosteens look like hand grenades?

Will these notions become strands in a Tom Clancy-style rendering of the tragedy?

Anyway, how does a police interview with a mangosteen picker go?

Policeman: Do you pick mangosteens?

Mangosteen picker: Yes.

P: Do you know anything about the vanishing plane?

M: No.

P: Are you sure?

M: Yes.

P: Really, really sure?

M: Yes.

P: OK. Don’t leave town.

The investigation has been officially badged as “criminal”. More than 170 people have been interviewed, which doesn’t sound like very many once you subtract the mangosteen pickers, shippers, packers, loaders and buyers.

Malaysia speaks of a “deliberate” act, yet there remains little evidence. Keep in mind that starting theories for any number of downed flights — from the touted terrorist explosion of the TWA Flight 800 disaster in 1996, and the terrorist links to two passengers aboard the 2009 Air France 447 crash — were mightily misplaced.

Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah has been linked to mystery phone calls, a flight simulator at home, a marriage breakdown and suspicious political affiliations that, on closer scrutiny, don’t seem very suspicious at all. Unexplained navigations and altitude shifts raise big questions. Yet so far, little publicly links the captain to a homicidal desire to die.

Evidence against the thoroughness of the investigation itself is more forthcoming. Why did it take, as reported, weeks to talk to the captain’s family?

Last week, the final words from the cockpit were revised. Both versions of the sign-off seemed innocuous enough. But how do the last words spoken on behalf of 239 missing people come to be so drastically revised? Was the transcriber in a mosh-pit when he or she first noted them down?

EXPLANATIONS remain as confused as Malaysia’s handling of the calamity in the first few days, when the Prime Minister did not front and local authorities fumed at the querying tone of the international media.

On Friday, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim offered his view. Had Malaysia been incompetent or secretive? In the first few days, he said, Malaysia deliberately concealed key information.

Still, there is some good news. Everyone is playing at being friends now. Australia is patting Malaysia on the back. China is patting Australia on the back. China, instead of beating up Malaysia, has turned on a more traditional enemy — the media.

The Chinese ambassador to Malaysia said the Western media had been disgraceful in “reporting false rumours”.

He seemed to have forgotten that radar intelligence was kept quiet by Malaysia at great cost to international resources.

The first casualty was truth, not that there was much to squander. In its absence little information — bar rumours and experimental science — has filled the vacuum.

Let’s hope the truth is still out there.

Otherwise, grieving relatives will be tortured to the point that they are more qualified than NASA rocket scientists. And we will all continue to be force-fed nonsense about mangosteens.
