by PNA - The
Vietnam-Latin America Trade and Investment Forum opened here on Thursday, drawing high-ranking delegations and over 200 businesses from two sides.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that despite the long distance, Vietnam always attaches importance to promoting cooperation with
Latin American countries.
Vietnam is ready to boost cooperation and investment with Latin American countries in fields of oil and gas, energy, manufacturing, agricultural and aquatic products.
The country also wants to import raw materials from Latin American countries, Dung said.
Dung believed that Latin America will actively participate and become an important part in the development process of Vietnam, while Vietnam is willing to play as a gateway for
Latin American countries to the large markets of the East Asian region, Dung added.
The two-way trade between Vietnam and the Latin American region increased from 300 million U.S. dollars in 2000 to 5.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2011.
Gabriel Duque Mildenberg, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade of Colombia, said that in the context of the dynamic development in the Asia-Pacific region, the establishment of partnership among
developing countries is very necessary.
The fine relations between Asia and Latin America have helped keep socio-economic stability in the regions in the wake of
global crisis.
In recently years, Vietnam has made great contribution to the development of the region, Mildenberg said.
At the opening ceremony, Vu Tien Loc, President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), announced the establishment of the Vietnam-Latin America Business Council, which is expected to be a policy dialogue mechanism for businesses and governments.
On the sidelines of the forum, seminars and bilateral meetings will be held to discuss and learn about the
investment environment of Vietnam and Latin America in areas of mutual interest.
