The 8.8-magnitude quake that hit northeast Japan Friday afternoon left some 5.64 million households without power as of Saturday morning, according to data compiled by power suppliers.

   According to Tohoku Electric Power Co. <9506>, power remained cut off to the entire prefectures of Aomori, Iwate and Akita as of 6 a.m. (9 p.m. Friday GMT), with about 4.4 million households in total losing power supplies in six prefectures.

   Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> said that as of 5 a.m., about 1.24 million households in total were left without power in the prefectures of Tochigi, Gunma, Ibaraki and Chiba. - Jiji Press
