Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> said Saturday morning that pressure control failed at three nuclear reactors in Fukushima Prefecture, which stopped operating after the 8.8-magnitude quake hit northeastern Japan the previous day.
The temperatures in the pressure control facilities of the reactors at the Fukushima No. 2 nuclear power plant exceeded 100 degrees Celsius, with the reactor pressure becoming uncontrollable, the company said.
However, sufficient cooling water levels are maintained, and no radiation leak from the reactors has been confirmed, the company added.
According to the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, the company informed the agency of its plans to prepare to release the pressure in the reactors.
