Filipino Saudi blast casualty, missing not dead
« on: November 12, 2012, 07:58:39 PM »
The cadaver of a Syrian national killed in the Nov. 1 fuel truck explosion in Saudi Arabia was mistaken for the body of a Filipino truck driver who reportedly died in the same accident, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Monday.

Florentino Santiago was among those identified by the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh as among the 22 fatalities from the explosion.

Following a DNA test on one of the two charred cadavers by Saudi authorities, DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez said Philippine Ambassador to Riyadh Ezzedin Tago reported Sunday night that the body that was identified by Santiago’s brother in law “turned out to be not him but that of a Syrian national.”

Hernandez declined to say if Santiago can be considered now as “missing” pending result of the DNA test on the other body.

“We will only know he’s dead if we are able to see and identify scientifically that one of the bodies are his,” Hernandez said. - PNA
