Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Makes a Record Breaking Sale of 1 Million CDMA Cellular Hand Phones

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that its Digital code division multiple access, in just a years time, has obtained over 1.4 million subscribers, marking a world wide record breaking sale of one million phone sets of AnyCall (Samsung brand name).

The average amount of sets sold for 1996 was of 100,000 units a month, but in the first quarter of 1997, it was 200,000 units per month. Then in April, some 300,000 units were sold. Therefore, the estimated sales for 1997 is to be around 3.5 million units, worth around US$ 2billion ( W 1.7 trillion).

Samsung Electronics is currently marketing four types of digital CDMA handsets, which is to cover all areas of the price range : SCH-100, SCH-100S, SCH-200 and SCH-200F, the latter two being the world's smallest. Samsung Electronics captured 46% of the market in 1996, and a 58% during the first quarter of 1997.

Samsung won contracts to the cities of Ivanov (in Russia), Shanghai, and Rio de Janeiro. It has also finalized a 3-year contract with Sprint Spectrum, the largest PCS carrier in the US, to export 1.7 million PCS handsets. The first shipment took place in April. Also, Samsung is exporting 200,000 CDMA cellular handsets to Hutchinson of Hong Kong.

Samsung Electronics currently has one production line at its #2 Kumi Plant wholly for CDMA handsets, with a production capacity of 200,000 units per month. However, company officials indicated an increase to 400,000 units per month, and a focus on R&D in developing the core parts of the handsets.
