Palace calls for end to political bickering in deference to Sin's death
by Rodrigo S. Victoria

Tacloban City (24 June 2005) -- A truce for politicians to make further actions that would worsen the country's situation and unity of the people in the call of Malacañang to all Filipinos as a sign of respect and tribute to the death of Cardinal Jaime Sin, one of the greatest and influential spiritual leaders of the Roman Catholic church in the country.

The former Manila Archbishop who helped unseat two presidents in peaceful uprisings in the famous Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) died at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan due to multiple organ failure after a long struggle with kidney problems and diabetes at the age of 76.

In a statement from the palace as stated by Presidential Spokeperson Ignacio Bunye, the government urged all political leaders and their supporters to temporarily shelf their political leaders and their supporters to temporarily shelf their political diffences in tribute and respect to Cardinal Sin.

As a reminder to the Filipino people of the legacy left by Cardinal Sin to the restoration of democracy in the country, Secretary Bunye stated that the government hopes that his legacy will serve the nation well and that his death would also mark the realization and cooperatioon for this great country.

Likewise, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared a national mourning to last until Sin's burial on June 28 and ordered flags at all government buildings and installations flown at half-staff from sunrise of June 25 until sunset of June 28.

In the local scene, one of theparish priests in the Diocese of Naval soberly said that he could only hope that the death of Cardinal Sin will be the driving factor that will unite the nation and will stop the political bickering of our political leaders.

The priest added that our political leaders should not concentrate on ventilating trivial issues but rather do their homework in search for a better solution to the pressing situations faced by the country and its people at present.

Fr. Noel Gayrama, a Franciscan priest and presently a law student at the Naval Institute of Technology (NIT), opines that accusations made by the opposition camp should be submitted in an appropriate court of law in order to prove the innocence or guilt of the accused rather than trial of the same through public opinion.

He added that the opposition should offer solutions to the problem that we have in our country rather than keep in criticizing the shortcomings of the government. (PIA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
