Commentary: Spare the urban poor, please
Baguio City (4 July 2005) -- Hundreds of urban poor folks from Marikina City are furious that they have not received the P250 they were promised for attending the anti-government rally in Makati City last Friday. Rented protesters are a mockery of democracy.
The President’s detractors and other groups are asked to spare the urban poor in the pursuit of the raw ambition for power. Ordinary Filipinos are the sore losers in the prevailing atmosphere of political bickering and mudslinging, let us not degrade and exploit them further by taking advantage of their economic condition.
We respect the expression of opinions and ideas as well as the open discussion of all the allegations being hurled against the President, but let us deal with these issues with hard facts and the right information raised in proper venues in order not to further aggravate the political and economic condition of the country.
Instead, We call on everyone to put up a strong fight for the support of sectors in the middle of the spectrum as they move to solidify their positions. We must also help the church as they help prevent other sectors from splitting its ranks.
Government must double its efforts in solidifying the country’s political direction, quickly implement big and bold reforms and support the same with a popularized and sweeping communication effort to all sectors mainly the middle and lower classes in order to avoid the public from being misinformed and exploited.
