Palace to PGMA detractors: "Spare the urban poor"
MANILA (4 July 2005) -- Malacañang has called on the detractors of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and other groups to spare the urban poor in the pursuit of their raw ambition for power.
Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye made the call as hundreds of urban poor folks from Marikina City went furious after failing to receive P250 as attendance fee in the anti-government rally at Makati City last Friday.
Bunye said the present administration respects the expression of opinions and ideas as well as the open discussion of all the allegations being hurled against President Arroyo, but pointed out that the issues must be dealt with hard facts and the right information raised in proper venues in order not to further aggravate the political and economic condition of the country.
The Palace official stressed that the ordinary Filipinos are the sore losers in the prevailing atmosphere of political bickering and mudslinging, and urged the government detractors not degrade and exploit them further by taking advantage of their economic condition.
"Rented protesters are a travesty of democracy," he added. (PIA-MMIO)
