Kiangan, Ifugao (31 October) -- The
Self Employment Association Sa Kaunlaran (SEAK) program of the government improved the lives of members of the association here.
This was bared by Felisa Dimog, President of the Poblacion, Kiangan SEAK.. "We are now lending a maximum of P30,000 to our members," she said.
A pilot project of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), the association which started in 1994 has 16 members who own sari-sari stores and some are market vendors. According to Edna Duhan of the PSWDO, this is one of the most successful groups in the province so far.
Dimog said that the members are paying their loans on a weekly basis during their meetings. With a 1% interest a month, the members were able to pay their loans because they are not hard up since the payment is done on a staggered basis and that the interest is very low.
She also said that the scheme is successful because the members can give any amount every week for as long as at the end of the month their dues are paid up. "Some associations are trying to imitate our scheme because out of the many SEAK organizations in the province, our association is the only one which still exists with the said project.
The association has now a capital share of about P150,000 which was accumulated from their savings and interest of loans since its organization in 1994. Mrs. Teresita Pawid, a member of the association said that the money which she borrowed aided her a lot in her business which helped in the education of their children.
Aside from the lending project, the association is also engaged in the selling of National Food Authority rice. We used the money of the association in purchasing 60 sacks of NFA rice on a weekly basis, Dimog said.
The association is also involved in the clean and green program of the local government unit by spearheading the beautification and cleaning campaign at the market area. (PIA-Ifugao)
