Catarman, Northern Samar (1 December 2005) -- A wide array of processed foods fortified with essential micronutrients under the Sangkap Pinoy Seal Program are now available in supermarkets, convenience stores or even in the neighborhood retail stores.

According to Evelyn Barrel, nutrition officer of the Provincial Nutrition Office, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has developed some high calorie-protein snack foods like squash chips, snack crunchies made from a mixture of rice flour, skim milk powder and beef blood powder and rice-mango crunchies fortified with Vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin for the children.

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute has also experimented with the mongo flour supplement for pan de sal, a traditional bun of the Filipino to improve nutritional quality of baked products. Among the more popular fortified food products are noodles, chippy, cheese curls, and juice drinks as nutritious snack foods to replace junk food.

Some of the listed Sangkap Pinoy Seal Products are Noodles, Dolphin Plus Vermicelli, Excellent Instant Mami, Golden Instant Noodles, Lucky Me Instant MAmi, Maggi Rich Mami, Saucy-Mi, Ho-Mi Canton, Ho-Mi Instant Mami, Nooda Crunch, Payless Instant Mami.

Rice from the National Food Authority is also fortified including the Fidel iodized salt and Asukal Pure Cane sugar.

The Sangkap Pinoy Seal Program is also designed to fight "hidden hunger" which is prevalent among Filipino children who lack micro nutrients needed to combat malnutrition. (PIA-Northern Samar)
