RORO cuts 50% off delivery period from Mindanao to Manila
Quezon City (2 July 2005) -- The Department of Agriculture recenlty activated the roll-on, roll off terminal system linking Mindanao to Metro Manila. This ensures enough supply of fresh farm produce in Manila when the Luzon area's produce is affected by typhoons.
The previous delivery period of six days has been cut by fifty percent. The inaugural shipment of the Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries of Northern Mindanao arrived in Manila from Cagayan de Oro port in just three days. Former Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap says that the RORO terminal system provides an opportunity to suppliers and cooperatives from other parts of the country to transact businesses in Metro Manila. Yap says that by bringing farm and fishery products from the provinces to major markets in urban centers, consumers are protected from further spikes in prices caused by soarding crude oil costs in the world market.
