Landslides close two Eastern Visayas roads
Tacloban City (December 30 2006) -- The continous
rainy weather condition in Eastern Visayas has caused landslides in two areas in Eastern Visayas which caused
roadblocks.
Department of Public Works and Highways Regional Office 8 Director Jaime Pacanan informed the Philippine Information Agency that a landslide has once again caused roadblocks at the landslide-prone area of Agas-Agas in Sogod, Southern Leyte.
The heavy rains in Northern Samar has also caused another landslide along the National Highway, five kilometers away from the
town proper of Catubig, Northern Samar rendering the road closed.
Director Pacanan assured that the
personnel of the Department of Public works and Highways are now at the Catubig area clearing the roadblock.
Another set of DPWH personnel are
working on the roadblocks at the Agas-Agas area. Because of frequent landslides occurring in this area, DPWH equipments could be seen parked in the area. This, Director Pacanan said is to ensure that the road is cleared immediately the soonest possible time.
Director Pacanan said that the continuous heavy rains in the Region may cause other landslides and floodings in the disaster prone areas, but the DPWH is
ready to respond in order to clear the roadblocks as soon as possible.
Director Pacanan called on the motorists and travelers going to Catubig, Northern Samar to bear with the temporary inconvenience and delay in their travel until such time that the roadblocks caused by the
landslide.
He also cautioned the motorists and commuting public going to and from Southern Leyte to refrain from using the Agas-Agas route. Instead, they may use the Baybay-Bato-Bontoc route, Director Pacanan advised. (PIA
