Commentary: Filipinos are tired of political upheavals
Tacloban City (3 July 2005) -- The chances of another people power succeeding are remote because the public is tired of political upheavals.
At this point in time, most of civil society and the Filipino people are reluctant to plunge into another people uprising. If there are differences to be resolved or wrongs to be redressed, they would prefer these to be done through legal and constitutional processes. Quitely so, for nobody really knows where taking a different path would lead to.
For one, the people are aware of the opposition's game plan seem to lead to lead the country into chaos by stoking the flames of another people revolution.
The recent protest action in Makati caught the attention of many not only becauseit lacks the desired number but because of the lack of support from the ordinary Filipinos as most of those present were opposition leaders and menbers, political losers and those aspiring to become political candidates, members and officers of the militant and partylist groups.
Most noticeable, however, were the presence of minors and children who were exposed to danger of getting sick because of the unpredictable weather conditions. Are they being used as a shield against the dispersal or arrest of the police authorities?
If these groups can endanger the minors and children for their self-enterests, how can the Filipino people trust them to run the government?
The message of Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales rings clear as he issued a warning against any short cuts to solve the current political crisis. The church leader also called the citizenry to remain calm amid the political turnoil so as to avoid further divisions among the Filipinos.
He said he is against any form of unconstitutional moves and ththe hands of justice and the rule of law must prevail. "Any proposed solution to the present situation that relies on or leads to violence is unacceptable,"he said. Violence harms the innocent and inflicts wounds so deep that take generations to heal.
Even former President Corazon Aquino has spoken. She is against any illegal political takeover specially if this is motivated to give power to the self interest of a few and not for the sake of the Filipino people.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines vowed to crush all attempts to destabilize the government and to see to it that the rule of law is followed.
In the local front, Governors Jericho Petilla of Leyte and Ben Evardone of Eastern Samar issued an appeal to critics of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo not to demand her ouster but for the whole country to move on lest it hurt the country's economy.
Indeed, minus partisanship and self-serving interests, there is always hope for political healing. National unity, reconciliation, not political upheavals, is the key for the country to move forward and achieve its goals. (PIA
