RP milk importation dips; Mindanao milk production up 11%
by Debbie de San Miguel, Becky P. Esguerra

Cagayan de Oro City (1 July 2005) -- THE country's milk imports went down by four percent mainly due to improvements in the production of existing local herds and adoption of better farm practices.

In Mindanao, the local field office of the National Dairy Authority (NDA) reported an 11% increase in the local milk production in the area, which is equivalent to 5,000 liters of milk daily.

The increase is attributed to the herd infusion of 188 imported dairy animals, plus the local sourcing and collection of payment-in-kind scheme employed by NDA.

The said animals were dispersed to new and existing dairy farmers in Zamboanga del Norte, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, and Bukidnon provinces.

Increasing the dairy herd in Mindanao has greatly contributed to the increase in milk production in the area. Local sourcing is a scheme employed by NDA to buy out dairy animals at a premium price from farmers, which shall be re-dispersed to new and interested dairy farmers.

Payments for the dispersed animals are coursed through the Quedan Credit and Development Corporation (Quedancor) as the funding institution.

Another scheme that contributes to the increase in herd is the collection of Payment-in-Kind for the animals dispersed to dairy farmers.

This encourages the farmers to pay NDA directly an offspring of the animals dispersed to them.

The strategy has proven fast re-payment of animal loans at the same time encourages more farmers to raise cows for milk.

The increase in herd has provided a chain reaction for increase in milk production and at the same time increase the market demand.

Milk production is part of the government's vision, under the 10-point agenda of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, to have a vibrant local dairy industry providing wholesome, affordable milk to delighted consumers, building a nation of healthier children and wealthier farmers. (NDA-10/PIA-10)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
