PAL donates relief goods for evacuees
By ATR (PIA-Cotabato)
July 2000

COTABATO CITY -- Philippine Airlines (PAL) through the PAL Foundation Inc. has donated 35 cartons of assorted relief goods for evacuees of Cotabato province.

Atty. Domingo Duerme, PAL vice-president for sales in Mindanao, and Davao City branch manager Arturo Balaga represented the airline during the turnover ceremony at the rooftop of the Provincial capitol.

The relief goods consisted of used clothing, blankets and canned goods which will be distributed to evacuees in Pikit, Aleosan, Carmen and Midsayap.

Earlier, PAL donated 20 cartons of relief goods and 100 boxes of mineral water to Mayor Muslime Fema for evacuees in Cotabato City.

Duerme hoped that the airline's gesture would help ease the plight of evacuees now housed in evacuation centers since hostilities broke out between government troops and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels last April 27. He expressed the company's willingness to be part of the rehabilitation program of the government.

Meanwhile, flights to Cotabato City remain suspended despite an earlier clearance issued to the flag carrier by the Air Transportation Office. The airline's lessors and insurers are not convinced of the aircraft's safety, Duerme said. He was optimistic, however, that flights will resume as soon as peace and order conditions in Central Mindanao improve.
