P134.5 M irrigation project to boost Mindanao farm productivity
Quezon City (2 July 2005) -- The Department of Land Reform recently launched an irrigation project in Mawab, Compostela Valley to make farmlands more productive. The P134.5-million project will water more than a thousand hectares of land and benefit more than eight hundred farmer-beneficiaries from Agrarian Reform Communities or ARCs in the area.
DLR Secretary Rene C. Villa said that the expected improvement of produce and income of the farmers will consequently help in the overall growth of the country's economy.
The irrigation project is a tie-up undertaking between the DLR and the National Irrigation Administration in support of the 10-point priority agenda of the Arroyo administration.
The project is funded by an official development assistance from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The local government of Compostela Valley likewise has a ten percent counterpart of the project cost, equivalent to thirteen point 3 million pesos.
Mawab Mayor Samuel Ampayas said that the irrigation project is so far the biggest support extended to his constituents by the national government.
Compostela Valley Governor Jose Caballero further added that the project assistance is a fruit of the farmers' unity and desire to improve their farm productivity and income. (Beat the Odds Infobits)
