Leyte towns choose their OTOP
Tacloban City (1 July 2005) -- The local government executives in the 41 municipalities of Leyte, in their respective areas, have taken the lead in identifying, developing and promoting a specific project or service which has a competitive advantage. This will become the One Town One Product (OTOP) of their municipality. The OTOP varies from food delicacies, virgin coconut oil processing, milkfish processing, bahalina (coconut wine), seaweeds processing, cassava noodles, mango processing among others.
The One Town One Product-Philippines is a priority program of President Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs. OTOP Philippines supports micro, small and medium enterprises to manufacture, offer and market distinctive products or services through the use of indigenous raw materials and local skills and talents.
With the assistance of the Department of Trade and Industry Leyte, the Leyte municipalities the OTOP of which are already ready, were given seminars on product design and development, appropriate technologies and marketing.
Governor Petilla and the respective local government units supported the OTOP producers to participate at the recently concluded International Food Exposition at the World Trade Center of the Philippines. This was a very good opportunity for the small producers to find markets for their products.
The OTOP which participated were Bato's dried mangoes, bangus, sardines of Inopacan, Manna Virgin Coconut Oil of Tanauan and salabat of Kananga. (PIA-8)
